|
|
Does anyone have the low down on this university or this recruiter? The recruiter told me that there was a fee of 15% of the yearly salary to get the job with the university, but could be negotiated down to 8%. I didn't even ask for the discounted fee, it was just offfered to me with no objection to the 15% fee. That tells me that it is a junk fee, and I just wanted to know if this is common practice in the UAE? |

Absolutely NOT!! NO ONE pays a fee like this at any legitimate university in the Gulf. Actually I've never heard of Skyline University (but new shady private places are popping up like mushrooms) or LWI and if you have any kind of credentials and experience, one always goes for a direct hire with the universities.
This sounds like a scam!!

What position did the OP apply for?
Skyline University used to be Skyline College but is now "Skyline University College", on the outskirts ofuniversity city in Sharjah. I believe they offer diplomas in Hospitality, Travel and Tourism, and IT. It's a small campus. It's Indian owned and operated. There might also be a campus in Dubai. I didn't realize they also have an English Language program. |

Actually,it doesn't surprise me that Skyline (or its recruiter) does this. Unfortunately, a lot of Asian owned and operated organizations prey on their compatriots in this way. |

Skyline College is also a community college in California. I think the Sharjah one used to affiliated with the CA institution but now it supposedly has cooperative programs with a lot of foreign institutions including the Flint satellite campus of the University of Michigan. Run by Indians, the Sharjah college claims 98% of the faculty have PhDs, but Wikipedia says
"The high level of doctorate holders is questionable. Lecturers join the college without holding a doctorate degree and two years later hold a doctorate degree." |

I'm not certain about the curriculum. But I'm pretty sure some English/Arabic fluency is required. For sub-continetal ex-pats it's a foot in the door for hospitality management and travel agency certification.
I ran across a former Univ Sharjah foundation year student some time back. His spoken English was pretty good, not up to speed to pass the TOEFL or IELTS.
I asked him what he was up to, and he said he was taking classes at Skyline. So apparently locals attend.
There is an Aviation program as well. Let's hope they teach landings as well as take offs. |

Skyline has been around a long time. It used to be on the old Dubai - Sharjah road through the industrial area but has been in or on the edge of University City for some time. It offers hospitality, tourism, etc., and also English language, IELTS certainly, and now has some sort of affiliation with an English university but I can't remember which one. |

But... the recruiter expecting 15% of the salary?? This is pure and simple theft. That is two months salary!! Any recruiter in any field that expects a placement payment that high should be in prison.
