Why did you decide to teach in the country you are presently in?

(Scuse the preposition hanging at the end of the sentence...)

Cleopatra - I can see that you are still browsing the forum (just you and me at the mo!) and I always wanted to know how you chose Saudi.

Is it quality of life, or salary, or some other consideration that led you to where you are now?

I confess that I chose Japan because of the salary. I don't crave money and am not particularly materialistic, but I've got something like $40,000 worth of student loans to pay off.

I chose Japan for culture. The salary didn't do much to dissuade me either. Smile

I chose France because I thought I could bone up on my French and then return to Canada. In addtion, I'd never been there before.

I returned to Canada (home) because I thought I could build a future here. I'm beginning to seriously question that now. I may have jumped the gun.

I chose Turkey because of its hypnotic attraction - the more I learn about it, the less I understand it. It's a life's work. (plus the simple things in life are VERY pleasant here).

I chose Japan when I left Canada because of the money and the ease with which I found a job there. I had student loans to pay off and that was a big push.

After 2 years in Japan, I chose Hong Kong because it was a real high school teaching job, not a conversation school. I came to Hong Kong on vacation twice and loved it here. I don't regret my move to Hong Kong at all and I love it here.

I chose Mexico because after fulfilling a very long standing fascination with the place and coming on holiday for 2 months, I decided I wanted to come back and live here. Also I'd been learning Spanish for a few years and wanted to improve that.

I'm leaving in July (talk about having mixed feelings!) because a few things haven't worked out for me here, but I'm going to Spain, because I love being around Spanish speakers and the way I feel when I speak it. My TOEFL students inspire me and maybe one day I'll do some kind of university study in Spanish.

Think I might have become obsessed... Rolling Eyes

Money....no other reason...I was broke in Toronto and just getting deeper into debt....

Stayed for six years so you know the money was good...

and now moving to Korea...for family...my wife and I are going to help out her parents...

I wanted to teach in Mexico or Central America - but I was broke and desperate for work, so I took the first job I was offered. Rolling Eyes

In retrospect, I should have taken my time and found a job more to my liking. My school here is actually quite decent, but after 9 months I've had enough of Indonesia and will take my time to find my ideal location in Latin America.... Very Happy

thanks to all the BUSHit of Patriot Act and other homecrap security rules, my wife and I decided that we no longer wanted to reside in the states, we packed up and headed to Morocco for a while as I have some family there...spent 5 months teaching there and did not like it much .... I picked China thinking that it would be agood think to learn Mandarin and maybe in 4 years I will be fluent enough to work for the 2008 olympics

I moved to Hong Kong from Bangkok for love, about six months ago now, and we just broke up!!!

But still, Hong Kong is a VERY interesting place, my tsudents are amazing, the money is good and it is a great base to explore China, a country that fascinates me, without having to survive on a Chinese salary.

But previously - I took a job in Indonesia because it was offered and I was desparate to leave the UK (big mistake and way to rash - I so know where you're coming from Is650!

Then after the Bali bomb my family (and embassy) insisted I leave - so instead of going home I went to visit relatives in Thailand, fell into a job and had the best time of my life....

Next is Mexico......
