My wife, being finicky, liked to go to Panda for the meats, I think, and to Tamaimi for the veggies. All I remember is that she'd be gone for about four hours with her driver, supposedly, to shop from store to store for items that she liked. Laughing According to her, the vegetables and fruits at Panda "sucked".

I found it was the meat that sucked at Panda, and that the vegetables and fruit were fine.

There isn't really the class distinction in Saudi Supermarkets that you find in UK supermarkets. In general there is little or no difference in price.

Food does not cost $1000 a month in the US for a single person. The only reason I spent more for food in the US than in KSA is because there's a much larger selection of everything tempting. Cleo's comment is what you'd expect from her but debatable. There isn't really much of a selection of American foods in the delightful kingdom other than cereals and jams and the like. There's nothing comparable anywhere except perhaps Britain to one of the better supermarkets in the States. At the Publix chain, for example, their in-house bakeries make pastries that rival any patisserie in Europe.

Some people here are confused. US consumer prices are the lowest of any developed nation. That's why purchasing power--income vs cost of goods--has consistently been ranked as highest in the world. this is particularly true in consumer electronics. Reality check!

I could have that in reverse... That being said, I'm referring to Riyadh. Things may be different/better in the EP, it being on the coast...as well as my info being a bit dated. Confused

Ahh, Sheikh, Publix is near and dear to my heart, and indeed they have a great bakery, but it is not comparable to the bakeries of Paris or Copenhagen. You are sorely mistaken on that point.

And there is NOTHING in KSA to rival any of them.

The quality of food at Panda does seem to vary no end.

I used to shun the Panda in Riyadh on Oruba Street, even though it was the nearest to my house, and use EuroMarche at the other end of Oruba, or Tamini on Takasusi, or a third supermarket I can't remember a couple of kilometers into the centre.

On the other hand in Dhahran/Khobar the difference between the different supermarkets seems small. I normally go to HyperCor in Rashid Mall because I can hang around the mall for a couple of hours before doing the shopping but the quality seems the same as all others.

Isn't Euromarche on Takasusi? Or, am I completely turned around?

Dear NCTBA.

Right you are - Takhassusi St - for the one in Riyadh (using the spelling at the site below.)

http://www.euromarche.com/aboutus.html

I think Al Tamimi is on Al-Thalatheen, the one in Olaya.

Regards,
John

It's on the corner of Ouruba and Takshassusi, as the map shows.
