I went through a contact offered through my university (Mark Bolding and his program CNET - China Needs English Teachers) who does passive recruiting for them because he's a former teacher. The job is 4000RMB/month+1000RMB housing, 16 hours/week, basic insurance, 8000RMB flight reimbursement at the end. I know that's a pittance for an experienced teacher, but see my qualifications below to say if it's horrible for me.

1) After the application process I was offered the job, but with condition as to my visa application: I have to send in my formal acceptance this Monday (it's Friday evening for me) in order for them to process the F-visa with the rest of the teachers they've hired.

Mark Bolding sounds dodgy, if these are the terms being offered up.

Poor pay and illegal working terms? That's all I need to know about Mark Bolding! Rolling Eyes

I do 'passive recruiting' also. Our minimum terms are 6,000 RMB for 15 hours/ week, plus legal working visa. I will not do 'passive recruiting' if the minimum terms can't be met. Why bother?

It isn't hard, folks, for employers to achieve these minimum requirements if they can't meet the minimum, they're not employers, just shady goofs!

An entity performing illegal practices in China operated by a laowai, at the expense of other laowai: http://www.mmbolding.com/

I hope Mark Bolding is enjoying the money he makes off of scams!

There are two places near wuxi with almost the same name, there is suzhou and Xuzhou (correct my spelling) one is 2 hours from wuxi, great place to visit the other one is a dead end city in the middle of nowhere. I worked in WUxi for a year and yeah it is expensive, my salary was 6000 with a free condo, 1500 per month included, no bills. So the salary is too low from your offer. And sharing an apartment, what the hell is up with that?

I looked at the website. In some ways not much different than other recruiters, but I had to laugh when I read "We are not a commercial or for-profit organization and are trying to contain the costs."

Isn't it nice for people like this to get these teachers in contact with schools for free. They must be rich not asking for money from schools (or stupid?).

It looks like the folks in Jiangsu have been paying attention to the discussion of their offer. This announcement just came through seriousteachers.com:

This advertisement has been placed by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Educations International College. We are not agents or recruiters.
The JPDE has initiated an international pilot program immersed in nine (9) elite senior secondary schools across the province.
We are seeking twenty-one (21) more ESL and/or IELTS teachers for the on-coming academic year. commencing 01 September 2009 (paid orientation week will commence 24 August). Applicants must have recognised qualifications/experience in these disciplines.
Our curriculum providers require only native English teachers from the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Unfortunately time does not allow replies to teachers who do meet these basic requirements.
The students are Chinese high school students preparing to undertake tertiary studies abroad. Curriculum is set and the teaching load various with a maximum of 20 classes per week
A full China package is on offer the successful candidates with a starting salary of rmb 7,000, self-contained single (or married for couples) apartments, reimbursed airfare allowance, z working visa, eight (8) weeks paid holidays in a one year contract and comprehensive medical insurance.
Telephone interviews will be held over the next two weeks, so please include a reliable telephone number and appropriate time/s to be contacted.with your application.

Notice: we are not recruiters, salary of 7,000, self-contained apartment, Z visa.

It sounds like this offer has been substantially sweetened since it was made to the first poster.
