Could anyone give me a rough idea of how much a married couple'd need to live on with 2 kids under 5? And what do salaries for teaching range from to? The best and the worst employers? I have a CELTA, CELTYL and a PGCE in English and Drama; my husband has the CELTA and DELTA with experience teaching everything under the sun including wee kids and uni courses.

Thanks for any advice you can give Very Happy

I did a Sri Lanka search and a certain poster (who refers to himself in 3rd person) says that there really aren't any openings for EFL teachers. Apparently, many Sri-lankans speak English already. This certain poster knows what he's talking about, but tends to point out the non-optimistic side of things.

Good Luck

I spent a month in Sri Lanka last fall and it's true that most people speak English to some degree. I think there is already a decent sized expat community there so I would attempt to seek out some of their boards. Have you been there before? Do you have any cities in mind that you would like to move to?

I think your only option would be to secure a job at an international school. Find international schools in Sri Lanka if they exist and contact them about getting a job as an English teacher.

We were considering Colombo. I've heard that the only school with decent pay is OSC, but I'd consider the British Council too if any vacancies arose. But I have no idea what salaries they pay...

i would venture a guess and say SL salaries would probably hover around 33% of Bharati salaries, i.e. you're lucky if you get $80 or $90 US dollars a month.

$80 / $90 per month?! Surely not - I've definitely seen ads for more than this, even with small schools...

OK minus my sarcasm, Id still guess no more than $200 US per month, as I was offered 1 job for that in Ahmadabad in 2007, and another job in Hyderabad for $275 US/month. (12,000-17,000 rupees)
