Yikes!!!!! $100 is crazy talk! The places Ive stayed in have ranged from $18 a night (the last room they had, so they raised the price $3) to $30 a night (the cheaper hotel was in fact nicer than this one was).
Id recommend that you think about climate, city size, and what exactly youre looking for (ie work experience, a tan (je je je), a more steady job, random hours at a few different smaller language schools) and then hone in on an area of the country. Also, remember that when you find your first place to live, it might just be a room in the house of some family (which is good because they can help out immensely with adjustments), but I would say to save money when possible and go for hostels or smaller hotels. I say this too because teachers here who teach 20 hours a week earn the equivalent of about $400 US a month, so the thought of $100 night isnt really conceiveable for me!

C76,

When I first read your post, I assumed the $ stood for Mexican pesos. If in fact it means U.S. dollars, then my response is as follows:

No, no, no! Don't even consider paying 100 U.S. dollars a day for a hotel room! In the city where I am, you can rent an apartment in the downtown area for USD$40 a day. It's easy to find nice, safe, clean, decent hotels here in the USD$25-30 range, and with a bit of searching, you can find nice ones that are even less expensive. There's a nice hostel that charges about 6 dollars per day dorm style, 12 dollars for a private room with shared bath, and 16 dollars for a private room with private bath.

The less expensive hotels might not advertise much on the Internet, but there are plenty of them around.

C76, if I were you, I'd invest in a Lonely Planet. I've found my copy invaluable. While its not the 'bible' that lots of people make it out to be, it can be really useful when finding somewhere to stay, things to do, etc. And I still use it now to get an idea of where I want to spend my holidays.

Just a thought.

Have a good day,
Lozwich.

So it can be done? Mexico on a budget. Cool

Now all I need is some $$ and some nerve.

(I also need to check the response to my teachers' college applications, but that's another thread. Wink )

Thanks everyone!
