|
|
I'm considering applying for a position in New Delhi, but would like to know beforehand what sort of costs I would be looking at. So, can I ask a few questions?
Very roughly, how much would a comfortable two-bedroom flat in a nice area set me back?
How much would car rental be?
How much tax would I have to pay on a salary of 90-100k rupees/month?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Hmm, I'm not sure how much rental is in New Delhi, but if it is similar to Bangalore, which I imagine it is, it should be around Rs 15 000 a month.
Are you seriously considering driving? I would advise against it. You can usually rent a car (with driver) for around Rs. 1000 a day. But you might find it more practical to take autorickshaws or taxis. Or, if this is long term, consider buying/leasing a car and hiring a driver. (Rs 5000/month for the driver)
Tax on that salary range (which is really quite high!) is 33%, the highest.
That kind of pay will finance an extremely comfortable lifestyle. India has a very low cost of living and that is like 20 times the average wage. For more info, check out the cost-of-living survey on tefl.com to get an idea of prices, etc. |

Do bear in mind that Dehli is incredibly crowded and the population is increasing at a rate of around 400,000 a year.
The salary you are talking about is incredibly high for India -- there are jobs in Saudi that pay less! Do remember though that whilst India is very cheap for service (servants, restaurants, transport) it is much more expensive than the West for consumer goods. |

That is flippin' amazing in India! When I travelled there in 95 I found it amazingly cheap. Of course, I know backpacking is different to living, renting an apartment, tc, but I would still expect that to go very, very far. |

I went to India in 2004 and know that 15 000 a month can get you ALOT. India is still not too expensive a place to live. In fact, it is downright affordable for most westerners.
If you made half of that salary, you can still live comfortably in most parts of India. |

That would totally depend on where you want to go, where you want to stay, and what you want to do!
Can you be more specific? |

When I went in 95, 200 pounds was plenty (about 3000). However, now I'd possibly double that. To be on the safe side. It's getting a lot more expensive apparently. |

anyone making 100k in India deserves a pat on the back, a bottle of champagne, and 18 servants. |
