The test is rigged!
I did it once as an American and once as a non-American, and I got easier questions and therefore a higher score the second time. Coincidence? I think not!
Well, maybe it was a coincidence. The questions did seem pretty random, and the test creators don't seem so brilliant, since they don't know the difference between knowledge of trivia (mostly) and intelligence.
Even I know that Kuala Lumpur is a city, and I'm an American. |

Wordgirl....I think it was supposed to be a joke and a mild follow-on of the 'American's don't know sh1t' thread.
We all do love you, really, honest...

| Um, I know it was a joke. I guess my sense of humor isn't coming through too well. I'll work on that. |

I got 18/20. One I missed was 50/50, the other was an "oh sh*t, too trigger happy".

I don't think it is rigged, as I did the test twice as a furriner and then twice as an American, just to be scientifically semi-sound. As a foreigner I got 17 and 18/20. As a Yank, I then scored 18 and 19/20. I got a lot of the same questions over and over, thus being able to correctly ID the date of the Spanish Civil war by the second round, etc. I'm sure if I did it for a fifth time, I'd get 20------ should I do it as a Foreigner or American?
Sincerely,

I took the test a few times, once as an American and once as a Non-American. As an American, I got 16 out of 20. The Beatles question and (I am ashamed to admit it) the geography questions killed me. Here's the summary of my results:
| Quote: |
| For an American, your knowledge of the world and its history is surprisingly good. About the same as the average school-age person in any other country. If you are at school, congratulations. If you are an adult, try harder. Read books, visit other countries, and watch less television. Learn to understand the world better and you could become an ambassador for your country, demonstrating that Americans are not all stupid. |
The second time I took the test, I intentionally attempted to miss several questions and got a 12 out of 20. Here's the feedback:
| Quote: |
| Well done. You have a fairly good understanding of the world and its history. |
So the message here is if you are an American that answers many of the questions correctly, you should still try harder, but if you are a non-American that doesn't know as much, it doesn't matter because you already know enough and "have a fairly good understanding of the world and its history"? Whatever! |

Don't give this link to any students in China. They'll have a hissy fit if they see that the tallest building is in the country of Taiwan and not the country of China.
Oh, 18/20. |

Ah, but the correct answer for that one is Taiwan, they recently built a tower in Taipei that tops the one in Kuala Lumpur.
This threw me off, because almost 3 years of living in the PRC has, er, "conditioned" me into thinking Taiwan is actually a province of China.

I got the first 17 right and then the last 3 wrong. Guess my attention span needs a litle work or I was too c*cky.
I like online quizzes except when I show them to my wife, she usually kicks my butt. |

It seems the quiz is rather anti-American. Oddly enough, the person I got the quiz link from is American.
In any case, the test doesn't really determine how "smart" you are, it just tests knowledge of trivia. Personally, I wouldn't have known a lot of the answers had I not taught students from some of the places mentioned. The Hiroshima one was a lucky guess. |
