How about cheap flights from Europe?
Or a boat?
Not everyone can go to/through the USA... |

THanks for that, MELEE.
Everything is a help to those of us trying to survive on Ecuadorian salaries...

I thought I'd bump this to see if anyone has any recent experience on low-cost carriers to Latin America. Any thoughts on airlines from Asia/Australia/New Zealand/Middle East to Latin America? |

Airfares to South America are as low as I've ever seen them! This is also true from Europe. You can find good fares through Kayak and Momondo. You can also book directly with American, BA, and Delta to get great fares.
If you're travelling from Australia, New Zealand, you'll likely do better with separate bookings to LAX, and from there to South America. |

I've just got a great deal on QUito to Chicago, and an internal from Chicago to Des Moines (very cheap with a hotel thrown in) from this site:

You won't find any cheap deals on ship travel. The age of trans-Atlantic liners is long gone. Best bet for taking a ship vs. air is to take a look at booking passage on-board a cargo ship. There are websites on the web dedicated to this type of travel. Cargo ships always carry 12 or fewer passengers, otherwise it's a legal rule of the sea to have a doctor. They tend to be cheaper on a day to day basis than cruise ships, but they take longer on their voyages. Most, but not all of these vessels call at US ports. It's sometimes possible to buy a leg of a passage (Ex: Hamburg to New York, Houston to Buanos Aires, etc). |

Spirit Airlines has very cheap travel to Central America, Colombia, and Lima from Ft Lauderdale airport. It's definitely no frills, but worth the low fares! |

Yeah, but with Spirit air you have to pay for EVERYTHING, luggage, food, even water! |

Like I said, it's definitely a no-frills airline, but when you happen upon one of their deals, it's worth bringing your own sandwich aboard. |
