Calling all those Izmir buffs; my name is Dave and I have just arrived in Izmir , I have found a small flat in Haty with a good rent TL 550 but now I need to furnish the place, any ideas on where to pick up cheap/secondhand furnishings and appliances? Thanks a lot if you take the time to answer. |

couldnt tell ya but i'd say look in any old junk shops for good deals. may take a bit of perusing thru flea markets, sookhs. etc
btw how much of a security deposit did you have to put up front and how did you find the flat, in the newspaper ?? |

Just down the hill - follow İnn Cad towards the city, there's a district called İki eşmelik that has cheap/second hand furniture.
On the other hand you could price the basic stuff at Ikea (in Bornova), if you're staying a while and would prefer to actually like your furniture you could do worse.
The other area to look for furniture is the road towards the airport - Karabağlar district - but one shop sells beds, another sells chairs etc. I'd use Ikea myself (but have used the others in the past!)
For appliances I've usually used Arelik/Beko. There are "spot" shops in ankaya (near the old fire station, not far from the Hilton) which sell fridges, cookers etc but no guarantees.
If you use normal shops it's always worth either paying "taksitli" and spreading the cost or, if you have cash, expect (and ask for) a discount.
Where are you working? How is Izmir these days? Good luck! |

Thanks for the information. I found the flat through Emlakjet, and I had to pay them one months rent, plus a deposit of one mont to the owner and the normal months rent so three months rent all in all, which is not to bad in Syria I had to pay the full year up front!! I'm not working just catching up on some writing which is long over due with publishers breating down my neck. I like Izmir, even now in Ramadan things are very relaxed. Once again thanks for the info. |
