Ah... so you are a disguntled student who is bitter because it is out of your price range? Welcome to the American system of education. Eventually they will surely create some sort of scholarship system for students who can't afford it as AUC has done. Another option is that some of that oil wealth is used for government scholarships.
And the fellow on TPM... last I heard he had moved on to Al-Yamamah in Riyadh. Before Iraq he was at ADU in the Emirates. He does get around.

"This isn't disinformation or rumors. I know what I'm talking about. ( Yeah Right! ) I've visited Erbil and "Suli" several times and seen the university,
Good for you, its a big blue and white coloured building with two big hairy arsed Peshmerga armed guards outside keeping the riff raff away, but then you've never been inside because 'you' are not one of the chosen. Besides, how could you have been to two places (Erbil & Suli) but only seen one university? Mistral, are you some kind of international university 'train spotter', standing alone outside on the pavements taking notes and photos? All alone, by yourself, with a thermos of tea and a pack of cheese & pickle sarnis? I don't hear anyone else dissing AUI-S. And, how come someone who lists himself as a 'contractor' has so much to say about EFL teachers?
Oh and Van Gough. [sic] What are the fees for courses in painting by numbers?
I don't charge and I'm hoping to set up an art club next semester. Simple stuff, encourage the guys 'n' gals to keep sketch books and draw stuff at home. It amazing how good simple drawings look once tastefully framed. Later this year I'll organise an exhibition of work from students, teachers and a few of my own modest yet highly sought-after daubs. I reckon this gullible lot of expat teachers will buy any old rubbish. And the dosh we make? Well, I'll give it to lads here at AUIS that help out at the local refugee camp.
Now there's an idea, M. What with you being in the Lego trade, construction and all that. Why not get your company to stop making a profit and spend a few months building houses and schools for free? Why should people in a postwar situation be expected to pay for their housing?
I think it's a bit under the belt to bring up old Owen; it's been two years, and we've moved on. And do try and do better than a link to TPM-Mudraker, that bastian of public information and social concience. St'ruth!

A bit tetchy, VS. The prices mistral quotes are exorbitant, unless there are only two or three in the class.
And whilst its staffing is not quite as disastrous as that of the American University of Afghanistan, it seems to follow the same pattern; choose somebody totally clueless about the country but with ideological affinity to the extreme neo-cons. |

Ya know, if it weren't for people like Mistral, this just wouldn't feel like Dave's ESL Cafe. Whinin' and moanin'...
But in fact, the main reason I'm writing this message is to start working on the 50 postings I have to do to be able to PM on this site.
Van Gogh, I hope you enjoy your stint at AUI-S. It sounds nice. |

The number has been cut to 5, so you don't have to work too hard now.

Hay folks!!!
Here's an article about this university:
http://www.counterpunch.org/greuter110620090.html
It is a left wing look which says the uni is an imperiaist tool. What doth thou makest of it?
Here's a good quote:
Quote: |
The nonexistent, awe-inspiring campus building featured in the universitys promotional pamphlet and on the AUI-S website is cheerily described this way:
Today, just a short drive across Sulaimani, on a sprawling one-hundred-eighty hectare parcel of land, construction crews are finishing the interior of a ten-thousand square meter, state-of-the-art Presidency Building, which will be the flagship edifice of the new AUI-S campus. By September 2010, this impressive, high-tech and ecologically sound five-level structure will house the University administration, as well as a series of comfortable classrooms and larger lecture halls. [italics mine]
These are outrageous claims. Blueprints in hand, I visited the site twice in June 2009: they havent finished the exterior, the foundation, never mind the interior. Its just a big slab of cement with some loose wires and a lot of dirt and dust kicking around. Thinking theyd be impressed, the university chancellor wanted the students to see this construction site mess, so some of us took the students out there on a cripplingly hot afternoon and then left almost as soon as wed arrived when it became clear how pointless of a trip it was.

By "left-wing" I can only presume that you mean fact and reality-based. A truly illuminating article and a perfect example of neo-con ability to corrupt everything they touch with religion and greed. They need to do the same thing that AUS did... bring in AU to re-organize the management. And how about AMIDEAST to get the TEFL dept up and running? They've got the cash and the students...
