Ok, I know that many of the schools/academies in South Korea try to take advantage of the teachers, but is this the case in China as well, or is their less of it? If it is the case, can someone give me some advice on how to choose a school in China, what I should be leery of etc?

I know you guys get this sort of question all the time, and I did try another site before coming here to bother, but all I got from the teachers on that website was a bunch of insulting generalizations about the fact that I'm American...

I've worked at three universities / colleges in China over the past nearly six years. The first place was a six month term and there were no problems. The second place where i worked for one year, they tried to get away without paying us our final airfare reimbursement, but when we stood our ground they backed down and finally paid. I was on an F visa at that place though, so I accept part of the blame for them trying to get away with ripping me off.

The third place, I've just finished my fourth year there, and they haven't tried to take advantage of me in any way, and in fact, have gone out of their way to make me (all of us in fact) happy. No problems.

here's my advice: Find a public university that has a track record of hiring foreigners and you should be off to a good start in China. Finish a year at one of these places and get to know the ropes that way.

As long as you're legally employed (Z visa), chances that you'll get ripped off are reduced dramatically since you can get the local authorities to back you up in such cases.

I'm still in school, and will be looking for a job when I get my bachelor of English. Will I be able to find a university in a city like Guangzhou that will hire me with no experience?

I'm sure you'll be able to find a job in Guangzhou with no experience, but a lot of them have bad reputations. As long as you're looking ahead and doing research, you should have a decent chance.

Cleric gives good advice. Public schools normally follow the rules. In general, the profit-driven private schools have the reputation of cutting corners. Of course, many fine private schools exist in China. In any case, the recommendations of peers should be an essential part of the decision-making process.
