I looked at the city on the map, and it's way inland, pretty much in the middle of the country. There isn't much information or many pictures of the city on the web, so I was wondering what people's experiences have been like living and working there. |

Even my Saudi students would shudder at the idea of going to Qassim. They call it the "darkest" part of Saudi Arabia (speaking in terms of religion, not race!). It is a VERY conservative place, and I would check it out thoroughly before even considering an offer there. |

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I will be at Qassim Univer. on 24 Sept. 2009
If you are looking for the capital of conservative Islam, then the nearby province of Hail is it. This is the home grounds for the Wahabbes.
Do what I do, travel to places, instead of siting about bored. First holiday we get, I will be traveling to Cyprus. Also the Saudi rail system is great for weekend visits.

There's only one railway line in the whole country (from Riyadh to Dammam with a long detour via Al-Hasa).
If brasscat thinks Hail is conservative he'll have fun at Qassim. |

Well put, SJ, but you forgot to mention the "other" rail line that goes from Dammam to Riyadh with the same scenic detour in al hassanland.

As far as I know, Qassim Province is more conservative than Ha'il.
But, when you are comparing things which are so extreme, it is pointless. |

Once you have encountered a Muktawa, the next dozen are of little concern.
At least you can get frest fruit and vegtables.
One thing for certain, I'll have plenty of source material for the next book.
