Hi Everyone,

Currently I'm waiting on responses to my applications to certain schools' Departments of Education. There's a chance I might not get in. (Mind you, @ this point there's also a chance I might decide not to go.)

I'm not too upset. In the province of Ontario, Canada, I've heard of instances where applicants get shut out @ home. However, some of these applicants make it into schools in the United States. I can't afford to attend an American institution. Thus I am mentally preparing to do without. Confused

My point?

I've been considering my options lately. I already have an Honors BA in English, and TESL certification. What I really want to know is...Is a B.Ed. an advantage in the Mexican TESL market? Are people more likely to hire you, etc?

Have you gone to the Queen's University Fair? It might have already passed (sometimes it is in Feb.) but they have goo employment opportunities especially for ASFM (American School Foundation of Monterrey) or go their website and apply directly. Now is actually the time to do so. I don't know their site but do a search under ASFM monterrey and it should come up.

I agree with what Ben said, your current qualificants don't make you stand out in the field of applicants, but you can certainly find a job with those qualifications.

Concerning the cost of MAs at American (I assume you mean the US) universities. Don't take the "list price" as the price. Most public institutions in the US hire their graduate students to work for them while they get their MAs. Particularly in the field of ESL, if you go to a school with a big Intensive English Program you not only get professional experience teaching while you study, you also can earn part, all, or even in a few lucky cases, in excess of your tution fees. An added plus is if you work for the university, you usually automatically become a resident of that state, giving you a lower tution cost. I know several people who got MAs in TESL (from public universities in the US) without ever taking out a single loan.

You should look into it.
