Something I did every time I had a visa run to Singapore, was to stock up on new and second hand paperbacks. They are heaps cheaper than many English speaking countries, and definitely cheaper and a better choice than in Indonesia. A good exchange media with other expats.

There is an Aussie supermarket (IGA near BoonLay station ) in Singapore, and once I'd discovered this, would head there for decent jam not filled with preservatives and a lot of other little goodies. Remember, you are allowed around 20kg back to JKT.

Wine from Singapore is far from cheap, and officially only 1 litre or so is allowed into Indonesia, although on a trip back from Oz, the Customs guy allowed me to bring in a 4 litre Riesling, when I explained that it had to last me a year! Just lock it away when you get expat visitors.

Kemchicks in South JKT has a good range of western food, but wow, it's expensive.

Indonesian meals are pretty good actually, but I really do like my meusli for brekkie. This is also available in Singapore (cheap) KemChicks, (expensive) but very hard to find in most of Indonesia.

If you have heaps of recharging things such as phones, ipods etc, you'll need a decent power board. Bring one with you along with an adaptor. Indonesia uses the same sockets as Europe. You can alsp get a power board that will fit UK plugs in Singapore and you'll have to organise the plug/adaptor to fit into the Indonesian socket yourself.

Now that I have a little netbook style laptop I have started buying e-books online, which works out cheaper than buying the printed version here.

I'm assuming that you'll be arriving today, so welcome! What school are you at? We've been at EF Cengkareng for a little over a month now and we've loved every minute of it. Ignore the horror stories-- they're just disgruntled ex-employees. The management has been professional and friendly and welcoming. We had an entire week of orientation and were more than prepared to start when we had our first class. Our DoS and the other teachers have been helpful and accommodating. Most of the staff at our school are on their second contract-- why would people stay if it was so terrible? We got our first pay check on Friday-- right on time! The teacher house is exactly what they told us it would be and what we expected. Oh, and we took our visa trip to Singapore within the first two weeks of arrival and we've got our KITAS already-- we're totally legal. I'm sure you'll have a great experience, too! Good luck!
