If you have professional certification and you are applying to UAEU for a new job posting I would like to provide a 'heads up' about the management. CAUTION if you are a 'thinking' individual and have expectations of being treated like a professional. |

if only this were only at UAEU... you're pretty much describing the situation at any tertiary institution in this part of the world. Sigh.

I'm with MrS... nothing really changes does it.
I believe with UAEU, there are a number of different departments that you could be working for and thus it is rather like roulette whether you get management that you will be compatible with...

Well, relocating to any new place has its own risk. This is the usual question, should one stay in the current place knowing its risk rather than moving to another place with the possibility to discover things like you just knew. Will be nice if you say more details about you experience, especially it seems you just joined this month. |

What 'heads-up"? What "CAUTION"? What exactly were your experiences? |

I agree with Chris. What's the story here - we need some details!
For example, why the need for caution, which department are we talking about, what incidents have taken place, etc? Remember, there's no need to even mention initials (certainly no names at all!) but the mention of a person's position and a simple 'he' or 'she' would help a little bit.
There's not really any point in coming on to this forum if you don't have the balls to speak out when it matters. Otherwise, you might as well go back under your shell.
Don't worry, they're NOT tapping your broadband!! |

Some weird stuff went on in UGRU at the end of last academic year: top management hitting the level just below. One popular manager was moved down for no reason and another OK manager was also moved down. I think there might have been others. Not sure what the deal is in the ESP unit.
Meanwhile it was announced at a meeting last week that the Foundation Programme will be defunct in about 4 years. |

As I recall, the death of the Foundations Program has been announced a number of times in the last few years, and yet... here it is... still ticking. This is based on the assumption that the new program that started in the schools a few years back and has had the usual quota of hiccups would turn out secondary school graduates with sufficient skills in math and English. Well... ADEC has brought in a few hundred new teachers this year and they are targeting K-2, which is where they should have started at the beginning. My bet would be that Foundations programs will not completely disappear for until these kids hit university age. If they were being sensible, they would base their plans on slowly winding it down.
Didn't we start a pool on this some years back?

I did hedge what I said - 'it was announced,' not 'it's going to happen.' Throwing money at K - 2 is not going to revolutionise the quality of university entrants by 2012.
But in general people seem to feel that ESP and Skills (teaching English in the Faculty of Humanities) are more secure billets than The Levels, as English in the Foundation programme is often called. |

Oh, and just for the record, about 3-4 years ago, the "skills" were going to be axed... now they're the hot ticket! Just goes to show. Plus ca change...

OK, the foundation programme is so unnecessary that this year there are teachers on both the men's and the women's campuses who were given mandatory overtime classes. I heard that a few of these classes closed quite quickly which is OK for the teachers concerned.
The incomprehensible, nay unacceptable bit is that teachers were not always given the choice as to whether to do overtime or not. UGRU management seems to be getting worse again especially at the campus coordinator level. |
