My boyfriend and I (he's from UK I'm from Canada) would like to go to China in the upcoming months to work for the year.
He is coming to Canada to visit and hopes to leave from here so that we can fly together.
If we both get jobs, will it be extremely difficult for him to get his visa (I guess a z visa?) processed from the Chinese embassy in Toronto, being a UK citizen, or will he have to travel back to England to do it?

Thanks!

Years ago I got a visa in Belgium. The only stipulation (at that time) was that the invitation letter had to say which consulate was issuing the visa (meaning which country the Chinese consulate was in). So I told the school I was in Belgium and my invitation said something like
"....present this letter to the Chinese consulate in Belgium to receive...."

So the school needed to know which country-specific consulate I was using, my nationality and the city didn't matter.

That being said, this was a while back and rules change all the time so someone with more recent experience may have better insight.

I'm fairly sure that since 2008 you can only apply for Z vizas in the country that issued your passport, otherwise it would still be possible to get a Z visa in Hong Kong, which it's not.

Probably best to check with the Chinese Consulate either in Canada or the U.K. for the definitive answer.

If your organised you could sort out the jobs before he comes over to Canada and then he can apply for his Z visa in the U.K. You can specify the start date of the visa, so he could have it from the time he left Canada.

Only the school you make contact with could tell you the answer. It is true, all you need is for the invitation letter to say he should get it in Canada, but can the school get that letter? Well, I don't know.

They started the home country thing during the grand Olympics, and it has persisted. I got my visa in HK last November. My school went through a head-ache to get that letter to allow me to.

It is really down to getting someone in the government willing to stamp off a UK citizen getting a Z-Visa in Canada (or HK if they feel better about that).

Again, talk with the individual school and see what they can do.
