My contract finishes in a few months so I'm considering what to do next, both in the short term but in the long term also. I've generally enjoyed the year here and I could probably continue to teach for a few more years but I wouldn't really like to work within the same setting as a Korean hagwon again. I'm tempted to go back to uni, I'm 24 but I would have to wait another year or so before I had enough money. I'm thinking something along the lines of linguistics...but what kind of work would be available to a linguistics graduate...I'm thinking outside of the classroom...what are the more lucrative jobs available out there? not neccessairly in terms of pay but work which is just generally more satisfying... Confused

HAve you thought about trying to get a job at a university? You don't need an MA for all uni jobs. Look at the requirements and apply.

Or try to get into higher jobs, like Senior Teacher, ADOS, DOS, management stuff. Coursebook writer might be an option too

i guess i would like the uni jobs. i just don't want to continue working with kids all my career if this is the career i pursue, they drain me...plus my experience in korea has't really been the best in order to get an idea of what teaching is like, half the time i'm just a babysitter Rolling Eyes and i think the main reason they hire western folk is simply as window dressing. so i'm interested in work which is more satisfying, more rewarding and a bit more dignified than dancing to the tune of children. Confused Confused

One of my friends is studying linguistics as a postgraduate, and hopes to become a speech-language therapist - assisting children who suffer speech impediments, stutter, that sort of thing.

The employment conditions are very good, and you would also be impacting lives in very beneficial ways. Very Happy

Come to Latvia in a couple of years once the crisis is over. You'll have up to 35 hours work (if you're that workaholic) with well motivated adults. No kiddie classes at all. Wink
