Hello all!
My girlfriend and I are getting married this month and want to go to China. I have a BA and 4 years of experience teaching in Wuhan and Beijing. Also am working on my Master's through a low-residency distance learning course. She doesn't have a degree or teaching experience (or really any desire to teach).
So.....the question is--can we pull this off? I have been tapping all my contacts and resources the past couple of weeks trying to drum up a contract but it seems to be taking longer than it should. Maybe just because it is September? We're looking toward January 2010 in Beijing or Shanghai. Any and all advice regarding housing, contracts, visas et al is much appreciated!
Cheers!

Unless you have a 4-Yr degree, TEFL, and a bunch of experience do not expect to find a good paying job in Beijing or Shanghai. March would be a better time to plan for.. good luck. |

I do have a four year degree and tons of experience. And I landed a good paying job in Beijing from 2007-2008. Actually, I am not at all worried about finding a contract before year's end--just getting a bit impatient, hahaha.
The question is: How will having along for the ride a spouse who does not teach influence the whole school/visa process, and the experience of living in China? I hope to hear from some couples that have done this or are doing it now. |

Hi there, you've worked in China for 4 years right? So you must be aware of the visa implications of your wife-to-be not working?
You maybe be able to get a spouse visa for her, but people I know who have done this are 'attached' to your working contract and also work for the same institution. The only other option I can think of is her being on a tourist visa which, as I'm sure you know, involves regular visa runs.
One year spouse visas are available to Chinese nationals, which I'm assuming doesn't apply to you.
Wouldn't she be bored? what's she going to be doing?
best of luck anyway |

It's been easy to get my wife residence permits here. She doesn't work (she's a housewife) and simply applies as my spouse. We provide an original wedding license and pay the visa fees, but aside from that no problems. Congrats to the happy couple! |

Cool! That's good to hear that visa stuff isn't too hard. Thanks! |
