or Adana vs Istanbul. i.e. some lesser-sized city like Gaziantep or Bursa: can you make 2200 ytl/month with no certification and only a BA(English) + 1 year teaching experience? Are rents for a small apartment for a husband and wife about 500ytl/month? Are utilities expensive, cooking gas, electric?

Can you save 1200 ytl/month in Turkey?

I live in Bursa now. Rent will run you about 600TL for a nice one bedroom flat...cheaper if you're further out from center. Salaries are right around 2000TL a month for your qualifications. Some schools offer housing but it is shared accommodations.

I'm able to save about half my salary because I'm living in the apartment provided by the school. It may be more difficult if you are getting your own apartment. Bursa is pretty cheap (besides the Iskender) and there are some great markets with GREAT fresh produce and non-touristy goods that are cheaper than you can find in Istanbul.

Hope that helps. Cheers!

that helps alot--so salaries are 2000, minus 600 rent= 1400, minus utilities/food/transp.= maybe 1000 ytl? Im looking to save about $600 US per month.

OK 1 more question. My wife has no BA, no certification and only 6 months teaching English to pre-schoolers/kinder. in her home country. Do you think she can work in Bursa and get maybe 1000 ytl/month doing some pre-school stuff without any qualifications? She is a ntaive English speaker.

eclectic, your wife should definitely try looking for work in Bursa highlighting her teaching experience, however short. one thing about turkey, a lot of places want a native english teacher, preferably white. its a marketing strategy showing off the foreign teacher of light skin and fluent English. i think 1000 is the least she could get. if that does not work, she can always try to tutor! good luck to her in her search!
