To the OP: It sounds like yet another tiresome case of an effete newbie who wants the "system" to accomodate their wants, desires, schedules, fantasies, etc.
You yourself wrote that JET has a fine reputation...that's right: so play the game its way or forget it.
G Cth has given you fairly solid advice. And as an ex-JET, I can tell you that to say the the JET website "doesn't tell you much" is BS. It's spot on as far as I'm concerned.
Suck it up, play the game, or quit wasting the time of youself & others. |

Maybe I am approaching this in the wrong way...although it's a big move for me, something you would undoubtedly appreciate.
I do agree with you about my comments about the JET website - on reflection, it's the best it can be. It was quite rich of me to expect more of them.
Your assessment about me is quite wrong however, I'm just seeking the facts. If you would like to respond to any of the substantive issues on this thread, your contribution is welcome.
Mosley, why not start a new thread about effete newbies and their unrealistic expectations? I'm sure plenty of the posters here have opinions and stories to share. And it would be really helpful - I would certainly read it. |

Down in Tokyo the other day I was wandering through Tokyo and looked at the ads for apartments just out of interest, and noticed a lot that didn't require key money. Most of them were 1K shoe boxes and still costing 50 -70k a month. I'm pretty big at 6ft and three years in a 1k didn't do me any harm. It actually helped to slow the spread of possessions that is aflicting me now.
If you look around its quite possible to find stuff without key money. It should be illegal but with the falling number of new tenants its possible to get better deals. For the apartment before the school housing I'm in now I 'negotiated' the key money, basically refusing to pay what they asked for and getting myself a much better deal. Still, they somehow managed to swallow up my deposit though.... |

LOL.
I don't know why I couldn't locate these; that's a comprehensive list and will keep me going.
All of my questions have been answered Glenski; and I thanks all those (particularly yourself) for your fulsome answers.
I apologise if I came across as ungrateful or selfish in my questions; I'm wanting to manage my expectations as much as possible - if they're wrong, I won't be shocked and disappointed by skewed beliefs.
Thanks again for your advice. |

Yes, I have seen a lot online that don't require key money or deposits. The websites mainly list properties in the Tokyo area, which is of limited use for JETs sent to rural areas (hmm, the majority I think!) |

I may be wrong, but I had thought that key money was far more common in the Kanto area and some other big cities than elsewhere in Japan. Key money started off as a bribe to the landlord in the postwar era when housing was still very scarce, so became institutionalised in many urban areas. I had heard that in other areas though, key money is less common. Are you seeing a lot of demands for key money in more rural areas? |

I've been looking online, and am yet to find any sites that list regional (or even rural) accommodation. They all seem to be geared to the Tokyo area.
It's my impression that a lot of Japanese government ministries don't pay a lot of attention to their web presence...many could do with a spruce up (I mean the graphics and user interface more than anything else, not the fact that many are only in Japanese!) |

What sort of accommodation are you looking for? If you land a job, likely as not your employer will have something lined up. If not, then many employers at least have addresses of places where you can look to get housing.
Face it, do rural areas in your home country have online sites for housing? |

Well yeah, they sure do. It's possible to find properties for rent in pretty much any rural area and town. The price is listed along with a full description and plenty of photos.
I guess what I was looking for was a site that listed properties for any locations other than Tokyo - for Nagasaki, Fukuoka etc. etc. I'm amazed that I can't find a website with this information, maybe I'm looking in the completely wrong place. |

Clearly you are. The websites are everywhere. Many (most?) are written to be viewed on phones, and a fair number won't return a page to an IP outside Japan. |
