i won't say which (if any) apply to you personally, but here's your answer:

1. you got lucky.
2. you looked harder.
3. you're more desperate and fear going back home for some reason which led you to look harder.
4. you had connections (guanxi).
5. you're in a prime location.
6. you're more qualified.
7. any combination of the above.
8. anything else I didn't think of.

btw, I wouldnt say noone else isnt finding these jobs, there are plenty of people in esl in this country making that kind of money at their primary job, but we don't hear from them often as they're probably too busy.

Those are all good answers, but none of them really fit for me. Maybe the school I am at actually values the work we do...who knows.

My rent is more than 3k rmb a month...I don't know how anyone can live on that.

You are better to go on welfare in your home country...

Unfortunately it is the same all over the world. People will pay what people will accept.

From my perspective, I am more than taken back that not one but a group of six or seven Americans at my university would readily accept and feel happy about receiving 3000 rmb plus half the return air fare.

The teachers they replaced were all on more money. While such things happen, it is going to have a very detrimentral effect on those of us that are already here trying to make ends meet.

When I tried to negotiate a better deal, I was confronted with the expected "If you are not happy, you can go. There are plenty of people that will will take the job for less because of the economic crisis" response. Clearly, it was true.

I stayed here only because I have a wonderful girlfriend but they knew that too!

Those are good points, and sadly, it is probably true...The scabs who come and work for that pittance because they cant get laid back home, are looking for converts, watched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon one too many times (and leave after being here for six weeks) make it difficult for many here to eke out a half-decent living...At least they have to do away with the "thats 5 times as much as a local teacher makes" crap in their ads...Its so much different than even 10 years ago, in that FT's are making less than the area locals, and we are becoming somewhat of a laughingstock...

What strikes me is the fact that so many FTs pay an outrageous placement fee for the "privilege" of volunteering to teach in China for nothing. I realize that some of them have the most altruistic of aims and don't intend to depress the salaries of the rest of us. But it would be far better if they accept a fair salary and then donate it to the charity of their choice. I have a suspicion that the salary they would be getting may be going in the pockets of a corrupt school administrator or their own placement agency.

Laughing My mistake, I got interupted after leaving xe's website and didn't go back to double check (so I guessed). Yes, you are right. It still isn't much though, in any currency where city life is concerned.

Thank you for correcting me. Very Happy

I refer to my earlier posting. People will pay what people will accept!

An appeal to all prospective teachers that might be reading this board.

You are not doing yourselves any favours and you are not doing any favours to the FT's already in China. Do not accept low salaries for the sake of coming to China on a paid holiday.

There may be reasons why FT's accept a lower total figure like 3000 rmb per month. That is OK providing the teaching hours reflect this. 16 hours per week for 3000 rmb is unacceptable.

In Northern China, a public university job should provide a salary of at least 65-70 rmb per teaching hour plus accommodation. Some may think this low but it is more or less the going rate. 16 hours per week for 3000 rmb equates more closely to 48 rmb per hour. If you accept this, YOU ARE BEING SHORT CHANGED!

By using even the most rudimentary of research, you can do better for yourself. This will apply even if you are a complete newbie and a recent graduate.

Secondly, by accepting such low salaries, it adversely affects the position for FT's who try to negotiate better deals for themselves in the increasingly crowded Chinese ESL world.

For some of us, the salary we receive relates to our income. It is not a game or holiday!

Please DO NOT let this kind of exploitation continue!!!!

Good Post and true about a lot of jobs around the world. Employers automatically want to pay minimum salary to save their budget or have the funds to fill their own pockets later. Always try asking for more.

A Chinese friend said that foreign teachers who are fluent in English and French are treated even better than just English speakers. A British friend of hers got 12,000 rmb with reallly good perks, that the other foreign teachers at his school weren't getting, just because of his French. She said it is the second most taught foreign language in China because it is the UN's other official language (and req'd for most UN jobs).

The UN actually has six official languages - Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish. I better investigate, I can speak 2.5 of them Very Happy

I will take your advice. Don't worry. I'm not cramming my brain with four extra years of information only to be paid less than the jock slacker who ended up flipping pancakes at IHOP.
I have a [Chinese] friend in Guangzhou who told me that with a B.S. in English I should have no problem getting a minimum of 10,000 RMB per month as soon as I graduate. Is this true? If so, then I will take no less.
