Hello Everybody

I just got a new offer fro Imam University. Is this a relatively decent deal? Doesn't sound like a lot to me. Holidays look good though. Please tell me what you think.

Thank you for your interest in working at Imam University. A snap shot of the offer is below. If you agree then we will provide you with a formal offer and begin visa processing for you. The position provides the following:

A base salary of 8,500SR for a BA/BS in an English related field & 9,500SR for an MA in an English or English-related field

20-25 contact hours per week

150SR for every year of university/language center teaching experience up to 5 years

Housing allowance of 20,000SR/year OR furnished housing

Transportation allowance of 500SR/month OR transportation to/from work

 Medical insurance

Annual airline ticket(s) to place of permanent residence

Paid Hajj Vacation, Spring Break and 1 month summer vacation

Ability to make extra money with other programs or projects

Ability to move to other projects within Saudi Arabia based on availability

I think that they are playing games. This is a terrible offer, especially for a university. The university is an Islamic university so they will probably only be allowed to employ Muslims (but I'm not one hundred percent sure) or are expecting mainly Muslims to apply. I would think if they could employ non-Muslims that the salary and general package would be a lot better. It's quite sad really that they would even consider offering their fellow Muslims such a discraceful package. I personally think that if Muslims are going to keep accepting these rubbish jobs in places like Taibah and Imam Saud University that nothing is going to change and the job prospects and conditions for Muslims is not going to improve if they continue to allow employers to take advantage of them. However, some Muslims may not be attracted by the money, instead being attracted by the country.

It's a lousy package; the salary alone confirms it. Beware of the vague references to medical insurance, housing and transportation.

    Regarding the cash options:

Even my low-rent compound in the KSA cost 2000 riyals per month.
I rented a car in the KSA, and that cost me 3000 riyals per month.

If you want to go to Saudi Arabia, there are better options.

Wont go for that either. Anything below a 12,000 SR is a total rip off. I am personally having 3,000 SR taken off my monthly salary to pay for accomodation and transportation.

Have you by any chance check or run a cross reference check on employers, qualifications and salaries?

    Not at all!

Most universiites give 45 or 60 days paid summer leave, plus the Islamic holidays. 30 days is well below the norm for a uni.

Also, the salary is very low, as are the transport and housing allowances. Hard to see anythign to recommend about this offer, especially as Imam Uni is known to be a deeply conservative institution. I suppose this might suit some people, but it's still worth pointing ou: Conservative by Riyadh standards is very very conservative indeed!

Well I am sorry, but that's a stupid thing to do, financially speaking. You could get a full-time driver at your beck and call for SR. 1,500.

Who rents cars for long-term? Rich people, very rich people. Cars are supposed to be leased for long-term periods, not rented. That car you rented was probably a Corolla/Civic, or at most, a Camry. You can lease a Camry for around SR. 1,000 per month, and a Corolla for even less.

And assuming you leave after 2-3 years, you can transfer the lease to someone else and get half your money back. If you stay for 5 years, you will pay it off and then own the car!

This deal is NOT acceptable for a uni level. It's very low and I hope we, as professionals say a big "NO" for this kind of proposal.

You don't have a clue what you're talking about.

Don't ever call me stupid again. Do it to my face, you coward, and I'll punch your lights out.

    We're done.

    1) I do have a clue what I am talking about. You are not the only one who lived in Saudi and had a car. I know more about cars than pretty much anybody else on here. It IS a very stupid thing to rent a car for more than a couple of weeks, unless as I said, one is mega-rich. I have met literally a few thousand expats here, and none of them rented a car for more than 2-3 weeks.

    2) I added this to my previous post: "And assuming you leave after 2-3 years, you can transfer the lease to someone else and get half your money back. If you stay for 5 years, you will pay it off and then own the car!" But you would rather rent a car and pay SR. 3,000 month after month and have nothing to show at the end... no car, no recouped money.

    3) I didn't call you stupid; please learn to read without injecting your own meanings into the written text. Why are you so insecure? I have done many stupid things too, and I wouldn't mind if someone pointed out something stupid I had done.

    4) I will do it to your face (not call you stupid, but say exactly what I said in my post)... where are you? Since you have this desire to be called stupid to your face (which I didn't do), you will have to travel to me... I don't care to fulfill your fantasies. I am in Saudi, BTW.

    5) You will punch someone because they call you stupid? (which they didn't do!) Good for you... you are a very civilized human being. And you are a teacher... is that what you would/did/do teach to your students and any children you might have? You do live up to your username, though.

    6) I am done. I just wanted to clarify myself, and I have done it. You can write all you want, but I won't respond.

Goodness you two... and poor Hendrik hadn't even asked about car rentals or leasing or purchase.

Because I was curious... 3000 SR would be almost $800 a month. That seems very expensive to me.

    VS
(interesting that this is exactly the word that got Prez Obama in trouble when he called the actions of the police in Boston stupid... which it was... but it was certainly interpreted differently by different people. It was all settled amicably over a beer... but perhaps the two of you will need to have a Bebsi... or tea...)

This board is getting a bit combative. Why can't we all just get along?

    Dear desultude,

"Why can't we all just get along?"

Why? Because the desert does strange things to men's (and women's) minds.

    Hi.

I have been reading many of your posts the past week and they've been quite helpful. So before my question: thank you.

Saudi Veterans, does this seem paltry for an EFL instructor with 5 years experience teaching academic, young learners, general ESOL; celta; u.s.a. teaching certification.

    12,000 riyals
    30 days vacation
housing, ticket, medical, visa taken care of..
    25-30 contact hours!!!!
    40 total hours

    thanks.
