Just wanted to hear from anybody with first hand experience with any of the following;

1. Had trouble finding a job while in Vietnam. (eg. longer than a month)

2. Been denied a visa/extension/renewal.

3. Not had a salary paid. (Apart from SITC teachers.)

4. Been turned back at the airport for not having a return ticket.

5. Been asked to stop working at a school when unable to produce documents necessary for a work permit.

6. Never had a Vietnamese girl/boy propose to them.

7. Fired from a school. (Not just had hours decreased)

8. Not told daily that you are handsome/beautiful from a Vietnamese person.

Really want people with first hand experience. Not people you know. I just want to get a take on the sich. Don't go looking into it too much, it doesnt need to be broken down or explained or even questioned. Just let me know. Also, I am more interested in Saigon rather than Hanoi. I don't want people writing for the sake of writing, I want to hear from people who have struggled to find work, had a visa turned down etc.

Here is my first hand experience.

I have all of the requirements to get a Work Permit, and when I submitted my documents to my school several months ago they said they took care of it. Maybe they have, maybe they haven't. I haven't seen the actual WP, but if I need to get one, I have the documents to do so.

Not first hand (me) but from close teacher friends I've known for years have been updating me ever couple of days.

The info I have may be incorrect, or subject to change.

It's #possible# now that a Work Permit will be needed for a 6 month multiple. The usual visa agents are telling several teachers I know that there is pressure being put on the schools to verify WPs and arrange and even pay an agent (and charge the teacher is needed) to get 6 month visas. Some popular and well known visa agents in Saigon have been turning out teachers, while other are only able to get short term visa.

A few teachers who cannot get a WP were recently given 3 month single tourist entries and told that it's not known if they can renew or not.

The cost for the 6 month multiple has also increased A LOT, for those with WPs and so have the single entry 3 month, for those that cannot get a WP.

Some other teachers (not the ones described above) that are at a large chain (the biggest chain in Saigon) are trying everything they can to get WP by using the "worked in VN for 5 years" rule, but they don't qualify.

I don't think it's entirely fair, but those that do not have a 4 year degree and a TEFL, are on borrowed time. There are many Uni grads in Saigon who have recently done, and are doing now, the CELTA. How long these newbies will stay is another matter. The fact is, they are here, and the gov and schools know this.

At more and more schools, (so a director tells me that's lived here for years), if a teacher cannot get a Work Permit they will not be able to teach at some larger schools in HCMC.

Of course, there may be a way around it, and we how things can work.....

Teachers that won't be able to get a Work Permit should have a plan B.

Get a degree, and TEFL if you don't have one. Get your criminal background check and physical, and be prepared to leave the scene. Don't stress, EFL is not a career anyway, especially for those that cannot even get a WP in Vietnam.

cheers. You see I haven't met anybody yet that has been denied. While I'm ok I am stressing for some of my buddies who were backpacking and loved Viet for the same reasons I do, and have decided to stay. They and myself from time to time have got away with the 'I'm in the process of collecting docs' which has been ok for so many schools in the past, large and small.

It screws up my sich a little as I was going for the perfect life (Nam) / work (Uc) balance eg. few months in Uc few months in Nam. Easy for me to get around, but I can see it causing some Nam stress headaches down the road. Not to mention for others who now must commit to a school only to find out it is a pile of crap. I'm still pretty confident that it will become a non-issue fairly shortly, but if visa's are being denied, it could become expensive to wait it out.

While, I'm sure I'll cop flak for it, I also love the dodginess of Vietnam and with every change for the 'better' I cringe and wish it could just stay the same.

One has to rememeber that some of the documents have expiry dates on them. IE believe the police clearance certificate has to be within the last 6 months to be accepted for the work permit.

I have heard of instances where as people have updated certain documents other documents have expired and in the end they decided to start the whole document gathering process again.
