hello!

i am currently a teacher in Thailand (in the north) and our dress codes for work up here are pretty relaxed.... long pants or a modest skirt, nice shirt (but no collar necessary)

am getting ready to head to South America - not sure where i will settle to teach on the way to Buenos Aires (will stop there maybe a year)... but will probably stop somewhere for a little while anyway

i obviously want to bring the least amount of stuff i can with me as i'll be carrying it all around on my back!

was wondering what is the normal dress code for south american schools??

I think what you've been wearing in Thailand, plus a sensible pair of shoes, would be just fine for a classroom in Latin America.

For men, long trousers (not jeans), a shirt with a collar and dress shoes.
For women, long trousers or a sensible skirt below the knees, a blouse or shirt which covers both the shoulders and the midrift and dress shoes.

Wearing these clothes have an added benefit of not making you stand out in a crowd. People who signpost themselves a foreigners, by wearing Bermuda shorts etc, are more likely to get robbed or hassled.

For outside the classroom I suggest you wear what all the local women wear, again so you don't stand out in the crowd as obviously being foreign. They almost always wear tight jeans, trainers and long sleeved/ short sleeved tops depending on the time of year.
