Thanks very much for the info on the timetables, very useful. Any idea where I can get hold of a timetable so I can plan around it? Im the eternal girlscout .... prepared, prepared, prepared Laughing

Highly appreciated

You need to get an annual time-table, as the prayer time is determined based on the sun rise and set. Don't think you can just get used to the 5 times a day- every day is different.

Oh dear... you may find much of this very frustrating then. Prayers are not set by clocks, so any written schedule is approximate. The first and last are controlled by the light of dawn and dusk, the second when the sun is at its highest peak, never quite figured out the mid-afternoon third one, and then there is sunset for the fourth. The prayer breaks are also of different lengths...

It is rather like the beginning and end of Ramadhan and the length of the Eids. Some of the countries have moved over to using the calendar, but in other places, it is decided by the traditional method of moon sightings... which can be affected by... clouds. I quickly gave up on the idea of trying to travel during the Eids. Making reservations was a nightmare when you don't know when it starts or ends until literally the day it starts... and ends.

Linda,

Yes the times change everyday but by a few minutes. Some websites do allow print outs of prayer times based on calculations, however I don't think they are exactly spot on. That you can pick up once there.

One I would recommend is this: http://www.islamicfinder.org/cityPrayer.php?country=saudi_arabia

Select the city you want to know the prayer timings for and off you go! Good luck!

VS: Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there one after Magreb...around 8:30 or 9? I get the names mixed up: Asr, Dhurh (sic.), Isha, etc. But, I always thought that the one after Magreb was the last of the day. Hence, one of the "Five Pillars of Islam": Prayer five times a day.

I don't know the names. The 4th prayer is at sunset and the 5th prayer is at complete dusk... for want of a better term. It is defined as the time when it is just dark enough to be unable to discern the difference between a white and a black thread. (same definition for the dawn prayer... it is to be once you *can* discern the difference... thus before sunrise) The last two prayers are quite close together.

I agree with VS that there isn't really any way to "prepare" for the prayer time. Even more frustrating than the fact that it changes every day is the fact that different supermarkets have different policies...some shoo you out as soon as the call comes, some let you stay in. Bring a good book, because any time you go shopping, you are potentially facing an hour of sitting around with absolutely nothing to do.

I used to print out a monthly prayer schedule and put it up on my refrigerator so I could always consult for the "precise" prayer time before I left. It still didn't make much difference, especially as a woman. If the taxi driver who picks you up is 15 minutes off, you lose your window of time for shopping. And sometimes the taxi driver himself wants to pray...

After a while, you just give up trying to plan and accept it as a miracle when you ever get anything done.

Aight coming back to the classroom survival guide. I can see people have mixed opinion and situation for different people can be different but of course we love to generalize.

I wonder if admin in university interfere in the results that a teacher releases and later they can be altered due to this and that reason, where does the integrity of the teacher go? Can one enjoy work in this environment?

May be we should be discussing "How to deal with the university management?" shouldnt we?

Well, I think the question should be:
"How to deal with the university mis-management?".
The word 'management' does not exist in the dictionary of the majority of the Magic Kingdom's institutions. They prefer last minute strategy to run their institutions! Laughing

Dear Chaudary,

" I wonder if admin in university interfere in the results that a teacher releases and later they can be altered due to this and that reason, where does the integrity of the teacher go? Can one enjoy work in this environment?"

In the Land of Wasta, even at the most reputable universities/institutes, it's possible that a teacher may be asked "to alter" a grade; I was, on a very few occasions.
On each occasion, I explained to the administrator why I couldn't do that, but seeing as they had the authority to do so, they could change the grade if they felt they had to.
My integrity went nowhere - I refused to change the grade. If they change it anyway, well, it's their ballpark so they get to make the rules.
I enjoyed my work.
Regards,
John

Good on you, John. I was made the same request and gave the same response. They did the same action...and in my mind, that was on them...not me.
