| The Just Landed site says to open an offshore account because money sent back home will be taxed. I haven't heard anyone address this yet. Is it true that you have to pay taxes in US on money earned in SA? Why has no one mentioned having an offshore account? |

There are a lot of discussions around the board about this, but the short of it is that if you are out of the country for a specific amount of time (you can spend a few weeks in the States otherwise you must live abroad), you may earn up to 80 or 90 K before you are liable for taxes. You have to file your taxes and fill out specific forms, etc.
You won't earn more than the legal max teaching English in the Kingdom. |

Maramara, check with the Internal Revenue Service or if you have a CPA that has international experience or auditing friend or colleague.
I am a Spanish resident and after 6 months or 183 days I am not considered a resident anymore so I do not have to declare any tax income here. In KSA is no taxes so everything goes to the "piggy bank"
Ill have to do 2010 even if I am out of the country but Ive already taken care of it with the tax office. My best friend a Government or State lawyer has all kinds of Letters authorizing her to do anything on my behalf while away and the tax office do them for free (Spain is different I know) Also I left a power of an attorney to my lawyers office (5 lawyers, 3 court lawyers) therefore I think I can take a siesta now |

Re: Offshore accounts
There is a lot of it in Internet. Some friends of mine have been working with Barclarys for years with no problems. Gibraltar is another spot, Channel Islands, loads in Europe without even mentioning Switzerland. |

| UBS (Swiss bank) was forced to disclose names and account numbers of some 5,000 American account-holders to the US authorities just a couple of weeks ago. It was all over the news. |

The US tax law says that every American must file every year declaring all income. (that includes foreign salary and gambling wins and proceeds of that bank robbery ) Read up on the rules at the IRS site for Form 2555. By law, the first $80,000+ (it rises regularly) earned in a legitimate overseas job is not taxable... but you must meet certain criteria.
I declared every penny I earned overseas and paid -0- taxes on any of it. You don't need a CPA... all you need is Turbo Tax or TaxCut and it walks you through it. No need to play games trying to hide money in overseas accounts. Besides... we don't make enough money to justify encountering legal issues.
