I have my first (phone) interview in the next few days, and I have no idea what to expect. Does anyone have any experiences / tips they could pass on, beyond the obvious?

Be prepared to explain how you would adapt to a different culture, how you would handle potential discipline problems, how you would explain certain concepts,.... what else you you consider "obvious"? And assuming that your interviewers know that it's your first interview, I'd suggest coming across as being willing, ready, and eager to learn.

Make sure you have some questions for them at the end--to prepare for this stage of the interview, look them up online, learn about their methodology and philosophy, and ask them specific questions. Don't spend too much (or any??) time asking about the salary, and do ask them if you can contact current or former employers.

Make sure that your reason for wanting to go to the country sounds good--even if, in reality, you're going for the money, the women, the scenery, etc., you've got to tweak it to make it sound professional.

Good luck,
d

Don't forget to ask some questions about their institute.

Thanks for the advice. Interview went well, but when I asked questions she got rather vague and I was left with a hard-to-pin-down uneasy feeling. Might wait for a better opportunity, but again, thanks for taking the time to advise!

I have a phone interview next week and am a little nervous since I've never done one before. Who did you interview with?

As a guess, I would suggest checking you can remember tenses and how you think you would explain them (time lines are worthwhile). Also, look at the conditionals and their syntax.
