What do you guys recommend? I don't really want to have to buy a phone line unless internet by phone line is either super fast or super cheap. I was thinking of going with JCOM assuming my landlord allows cable installation for the apartment. We had our old JCOM cable connection for about 4 years so I'm sort of out of it when it comes to the new internet deals in Japan. Let me know please! |

Oh man go with OCN or Asahi (optical as per the above). You really can't beat a 50Mbps internet connection - movies in minutes, etc.
And for some reason it's actually a bit cheaper than ADSL (~5000 yen/mth instead of ~6000) - that I can't really figure out, but hey I'm not complaining!
I went with OCN, if you go with it and need any help configuring it let me know and I'll give you a walkthrough. |

Sounds like I'm going to go with this NTT Hikari. Not sure which provider I'm going to use though-there's a ridiculous amount of them. I'm not sure why it's even needed since NTT is the source. I might get Plala |

I don't know if they're the best, but eMobile and Willcom are two such services. They're not cheap, but if you absolutely need internet on the go they're worth it I suppose.

If you don't already have a computer then just go into your local electronics shop and go to the computer section. There you can find all the latest netbooks and you can get them for the price of 1 yen if you sign up for a wireless plan from Softbank or Docomo. Pretty damned good deal if you need to get the wireless anyways. |

I had NTT before, switched to cable when I moved, then switched back to NTT when I moved again.
The first time, NTT was awful. Numerous problems with their slow connection and it was overpriced. Cable (through Baycom - a small company only in Osaka and Hyogo) was great. I got faster internet and cable for 1,500 yen a month more than I was paying with NTT and never had problems with it (I had them for a year).
I have NTT again and it's not as bad as before, but there are still numerous problems. The sales staff lied to me (they said I could get Hikari TV where I lived, then once I used my hanko it got changed - to be fair I could have canceled but NTT was the cheapest by 2,000 yen or so). They charge a lot for fees (their 20,000 yen installation fee is waived if you stay signed up for 2 years and there's a cancellation fee [regardless, there's no way you can get out of it] - none of which were charged with cable). My internet gets slow at night (I have 50mb Flets B Mansion type) when other people are using it. It took me a few months to find out the exact date they take money from my bank account - I never got (or at least was never able to find any notice saying when). They tried to get me to install some software (the obaasan on the phone said I needed to in order to actually use the internet). I have yet to find a way to manually configure the router they gave me (there's no help for it, the router doesn't have an ip address listed nor does the instruction manual). |

I have NTT Hikari Fiber + Hikari TV now. I didn't have any fees up front. In fact, they gave me 30,000 worth of points to use at Yamada Denki and the first 2 months were free. My only complaint is that it took about 6 weeks from filling out the paperwork in the store to actually get the line installed. They gave me their modem to use, but I use my own router. I didn't install their software on my PC as my friend who did has had a bunch of problems with it.
As far as the NTT router's ip address, just start typing in addresses. Start at 192.168.1.1 and go through 192.168.255.1
(Don't worry it'll probably come up before you even get to 192.168.20.1 ) |

If anyone is with OCN/Asahi or any NTT Flet's, and are using more than 1 computer at the same time, can you tell me how I can get both working at the same time? This connection requires PPPoE so since they only gave me 1 email/pass to use I have to disconnect one computer to use the other. I'm assuming I will have to call them for another email/pass to use. |

You need to store your NTT login/password into the router and connect all your PCs to it. |

I'm not sure if things are different (because of plans, discounts or NTT East/West), but I didn't have to pay any money up front (and got my Yodobashi gift certificates and one free month), but my contract clearly states if I cancel within 2 years I have to pay for installation. Only took me two weeks to get it installed. They actually called me to set up installation when I was getting everything sorted out at the counter.
I should correct myself about the router. Before I had a router but now I have a modem (which doesn't act as a router), which I hate. I can't store my login information on the thing, so I'm prompted for it on my computer. What a worthless piece of proprietary crap (I looked it up; it was made 7 years ago for NTT) it is.
I never intended to install their software on my computer. There's no good reason to. |

Yeah, I just bit the bullet and bought my own router. Now I've got internet access for my PCs, Hikari TV, and PS3 (and Wii someday? ). Also WiFi for when friends visit. |

I have a Yahoo BB package which includes internet, phone line and free wifi (because we already have iPhones with Softbank). It works out about 6,000 yen per month and the speeds are fantastic. Didn't need to shell out anything up front either and no line rental from NTT. |

Has anyone ever used http://www.bbapply.com/ ?
I was planning on just setting up with them when I get over to Japan if my apartment doesn't already have internet sorted. It says you can even apply using an internet enabled mobile phone which is pretty convenient :O |
