Hi

I just got my first tutoring gig in Dalian (A third tier city in China) with a grade 8 student. I'm wondering how much I should charge them per hour? I don't have a lot of experience with this age-group. Also, I'm giving them the first lesson for free (a try-out).

Thanks!!
Kathy

it really depends on where, when, and how long... if you are doing 1 hour twice a week at the students home it really isnt worth the cash.. i was doing that for a short time getting paid 150 an hour.. thats pretty good for Wuhan... the killer was having to wake up early on my day off, then a 1/2hour bus ride to the kids house.. along with prep time i was only really making 150rmb for 2.5 hours... needless to say i quickly pissed that off... how much do you value an hour of ur free time? if you enjoy teaching the kid u can take a little less money... if its a pain in the ass.. make sure you u are well compensated. another option is ask the parents to find 1 or 2 other students at the same level.. charge them each 50-100rmb and u can earn double the cash for the same work.

Thanks for the tip!
This is my first gig ... So I really want to just get some tutoring experience first and then raise my bar =D

You can really charge whatever you think you are worth. Myself personally, I charge a minimum of 100 an hour for 1 on 1, and I charge more when a small group is involved (group of 4, 50 RMB each for example)

But it's up to you. Dalian has lots of foreigners willing to be cheap so...the market might be tight.

100-150 per hour is about what you can expect to make for tutoring in that market. But I would never give a free lesson to anyone for any reason. Even a demo class for a language school should be just that: a shortened class to show them you can teach. Anything more should be paid for. Ideally, you could sell a block of time, say 20-30 hours, paid in advance with no more than one or two penalty-free cancellations. This is better for all parties. The students you are tutoring need an adequate commitment of time to actually learn something, and you need a minimum amount of income to make it worth your while.
