Dear TurkOwl,
I found this - a little old, though:

Cangirl,
"I will leave for Al Jubail April 4. My husband is already there. We will be living in the Pearl Beach Compound. I think this is the nicest since it has it's own beach - on the Persian Gulf. The other compounds are: Garden Village and Chevron. There is a new one being bulit also on the beach but it won't be completed for at least another 6 months. You can go online to view Pearl Beach compound - www.pearlbeach.org
and www.bajraigardenvillage.com I could not find a website for Cheron, but when I was there in KSA in July to see all the compunds I was not really impressed with Chevron Compound. Availability is getting pretty slim since there more and more expats coming in, so you need to act quickly and get on a waiting list if possible."

From 2008:

"There is a great atmosphere in Jubail. It doesnt really matter what compound you live on. Once you get to know a few people around and about there are things to do on many compounds. If you wish to log in and contact me i will be more than willing to give you details on the local "Atmosphere" in jubail. I spent 19 years in the gulf b4 a 6 year break. Now heading back over in a few weeks. Hubby is already there. We have 3 kids and there is loads to do. It isnt nearly as bad as some peole perceive it to be."

and this:

"There are two main shopping areas in Jubail close to the main housing areas. Most compounds are found near the old town, where there are a large number of shops. Private housing in the Royal Commission area benefits from the Fanateer shopping mall, and many supermarkets. Western, Middle Eastern as well as Indian, Chinese and Filipino cuisine may be enjoyed in a wide variety of eateries in the RC and Downtown areas."

Hope some of this helps.

Regards,
John

Dear John,

Thank you...There is very useful information inside...

I'm curious about current prices as well... Maybe some expats living there could give some information...

Regards,

I lived in the Desert Palms compound in Jubail Industrial City in 2001-2002.

It's been around since about 1994. It's small, but when I was there it was definitely a western compound. It consists of one-, two-, and three-bedroom townhouses. They're comfortable, and there are two swimming pools and two tennis courts. There's a small restaurant, a store that stocks western food, a laundry/dry cleaning service (though there are washer/dryer appliances in each unit). Satellite TV service is supplied, but you have to buy your own TV. The grounds are well-manicured and the roads are well-paved.

Regarding cost, I think it's probably one of the more moderately-priced compounds. When I was there the annual cost of a one-bedroom unit was around 35,000 riyals. That's a guess based on third-party information, since my company paid for the unit.

Dear MEB,

35.000 SAR sounds quite cheap since my friends living in Nesma compound talk about 65.000 for 1BR unit... But there is no room at the moment...

I do not understand how tennis courts and pools are used, sometimes temp. exceeds 50 C... A GYM and a restaurant could be very useful... I'm not good at cooking Laughing

Bear in mind that my information is dated. But Desert Palms, while clean and comfortable, was considered moderately priced since its inception.

I forgot to mention that there is a gym. My wife taught step-aerobics classes when we were there, and I also took some martial arts classes there (taught by another resident of the compound).

The restaurant ran daily specials, and they would deliver anything on the menu to your unit upon request.

The pool is great during the months of Oct-Nov and Mar-May. The tennis courts are great from Oct thru May.
