Everyone seems agreed that life in Vietnam is much better with basic Vietnamese language but also that it is VERY difficult to learn the language.

So.. rather than plunging back into the six-day teaching week I'm thinking of studying it more intensively on my return to Vietnam - Hanoi - and trying to get temp work (eg teaching children English on weekends only).

There've been some negative forum posts about VN teaching styles. Has anyone had experience of the Foreign Languages University courses? Or any other recommendations? Grammar and vocab are things I can work on, whatever kind of course I'm doing. I don't want to get stuck with a clunky, by-the-numbers course, as I did at Perugia. I want LOTS of practice with pron, esp tones (big surprise) and everyday Q/A stuff - the kind of thing I like to teach beginners in English.

All suggestions (or warnings) welcome.

1 on 1 is best for Vietnamese, IMO.

Classrooms are barely cheaper, and you get less out of it.

Finding a one on one teacher that fits you may or may take a couple of tries.

There's also more flexibility in private lessons.
