Hey all,
I am seriously considering TEFLing in Japan, and I have a question for you gurus.
I possess dual citizenship - UK and US. Do the East Asians, and in particular the Japanese, have a preference for one nationality over the other (both in terms of accent they wish to hear as well as general national perception)?
Also, remember they each have different Visa options (UK enjoys Working Holiday 6 month Visa, while US doesn't need one for stays under 90 days).
So which nationality do you think offers me a better chance of finding an ESL job in Japan
Cheers dudes, |

Actually, UK citizens don't need a visa either, but can stay up to 6 months if they get permission for after the first 3. |

Working holiday visas are available to UK citizens, but not US ones, I think.
It may not make a difference if you are hired before you go, but if you are the right age and hold a UK passport, you can get a working holiday visa, and have 12 months (I think) to find a job, as opposed to 3 with a US passport. You're also barred from (legally) working on a tourist visa. |

Neither citizenship affords you any edge on landing a job here.
Do you have a degree? If not, then get the WHV for a year (not just 6 months because you can renew once) and go home. Other than that, their "visa options" are identical.

Some do, some don't. |

Thanks,
I was not aware that UK passport holders were also entitled to 90 days tourist Visa.
And if prospective employers do not mind what nationality you are as long as it is a native english-speaking one, just out of curiosity, does the Japanese population at large hold a negative stereotype against a particular Western country or do they regard all caucasians as the same?
Thanks again |

It's called a tourist visa waiver, actually, and Brits get 6 months, not 90 days.

Many are enamored only with American English even though they cannot tell the difference sometimes. Many are enamored with British English. Case by case. |
