I have been entertaining the though of teaching in Thailand. I have no college degree. I do have my TESOL certification, though. I have noticed in China that many of the schools are looking for teachers with BA degrees or higher. Is the same happening in Thailand? I would like to teach in Bangkok or a nearby city.
How are the rules/regulations for the visa?

Everything in Thailand is gray, rather than black or white. There are different "requirments" for teachers depending on the type of school. Basically, it is getting much harder to find "good" jobs without a degree. That being said, if you are young, good looking and smile a lot, you can bypass a lot of "requirements". Without a degree, you will probably find work and be able to survive, especially if you manage to get some private work, BUT you wont be safe i the long term. And remember that there is always a risk of getting caught teaching without a degree (more likely in Bangkok) which would mean might get a free ticket home.
Also, without a degree, you will more than likely be teachnically working illegally meaning that your school will not be able to get you a Non-Imm B (work) visa and work permit. That means you will have the joy of visa runs which are getting harder and harder to do.
So, come for the short term if you want (6 months-1 year) but expect hassles and no job security. If you find teaching and/or Thailand to your liking, go get that degree and maybe even a B.Ed or PGCE to get the better jobs.
Good luck |
