Hey, I�m just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of the Living Language School in Tyumen or Tyumen generally. Thanks in advance for any help given.

Holly, if you look up and to the right , just underneath the " JOB DISCUSSION FORUMS" you will see a search function in blue.

Click that and enter TYUMEN . You will find a heap of information - most of which will say that it's a dangerous and polluted place.

I've never heard of the school but I can say that I've never found the city to be particularly dangerous or polluted.

It's a small place and there's nothing much to do or see there. However they have a lot of oil money and some of it goes back into the city. Compared to other places of similar size, Tyumen has well-tended parks and public gardens and quite clean streets.

There are many worse places in provincial Russia.

Thanks for being slightly more heartening! At the moment I live in a wee village in the middle of rural Spain so I'm pretty sure anything else is going to feel like a metropolis of exaggerated proportions!
I�ve check out previous comments on the place but there�s not much information other than the odd sentence, some disparaging, some not. If anyone has any recent experience there, would you be able to tell me anything more?

As anywhere, your experience in Tyumen would depend on your background and what your expectations are. I was teaching in the Tyumen region this past year and loved it. If you want a very Russian experience (both the good and the bad), Tyumen is great because it doesn't have nearly as much of the cosmopolitan and Western influences of Moscow and SPb. As others have also noted, due to its oil wealth, it will be more modern and civilized than many other provincial areas of Russia. In my opinion, your ability in Russian language and your desire to absorb the culture will be proportional to your enjoyment of Tyumen.

Actually, as Siberian cities go, Tyumen is one of the better places to teach that I've experienced. Plenty of history, life and culture, big enough to have a good choice of things to do and places to see, and small enough to be mostly accessible on foot. I've never heard of the school you mention but there are a number of employment options in the city based on its location at the heart of the oil & gas-producing regions. The people were great, the climate was relatively mild (for Siberia) and I'd definitely recommend it.
