Does anyone know of any programmes of study being offered in HK that would lead to eligibility to work in the HK NET scheme?

The above question follows on from the thread listed below in which Ger mentioned some qualifications:

http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewtopic.php?t=8671

Ger forgot to mention 3.5 years of China teaching experience.

I know a place to study for the NET scheme requirments.......... a university.

If you have one of those books called "The Yellow Pages, turn to section for words begining with the letter U"

Seriously you may consider the folowing paths;

ESL Cert -> ESL Dip

B.Ed + ESL cert / Dip ----> PGCE / PGDE -----> Masters ESL

or

ESl Cert / Dip ----> PGCE / PGDE -----> Masters ESL

Ger, your best bet is to take a PGCE in English teaching. I dunno what nationality you are, but if you're a Brit I strongly advise you go and do it back in the UK where it will cost you nothing. Or, you can do it in HK (I think it's called a PGDE here, but basically the same thing) at any of the uni's which run it. Check the websites. Of course, it'll cost you.

The only way is with a University degree. They will not recognize anything else. However, if you were a local teacher, you can get in with little training. GGGRRRRRR.....Love to incompetance I work with.

Did I mention this is a sheeeit week Question Question

Hi Foster. My commiserations! Of course yes, you must have a degree first (I'm assuming that Ger has one). You can't take a PGCE (POST GRADUATE Certificate of Education) unless you have a degree! Otherwise you should do a BEd (Bachelor of Edn) which will take 3 or 4 years depending on where you do it.

Hi everyone!

I was wondering if you think I might get a chance with this:
BA in Linguistics (Moscow State University),
BA in Education (University of California at Davis),
Trinity TESOL Certificate (gained in HK)
+ 9 years of experience (4 of them in China).
The biggest problem is that I am half Brit, half Rus and I HAVE A ******* Rus Passport!!! (I had a choice when I was 16 and decided to have a Rus.Pass. 'cause then my education was FREE!!! instead of it being $7000 a semester with the UK Pass.)
Do I even have a smallest chance???

I don't see that there is any mystique in what is written on the site. If only people would bother to check the site. Here is what it states:

Primary NET:

Qualifications for Appointment

Candidates should be native-speakers of English or have native-speaker English competence and should possess:
(i) A bachelor's degree majoring in English Language or English Literature or English Studies or Linguistics** or a Modern Language** or any subject; and
(ii) A recognized teacher training qualification in primary education; and
(iii) A Teaching of English as a Foreign Language or a Second Language (TEFL/TESL) qualification at least at certificate level.
Applicants who possess (i) and (ii), but not (iii) above shall also be considered if they undertake to obtain the TEFL/TESL qualification in the first 12 months of contract at their own expenses and in their own spare time.
Candidates should be native-speakers of English or have native-speaker English competence and should possess:
Applicants who possess a bachelor's degree in any subjects AND a recognized teacher training qualification not in primary education AND a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at certificate level may also apply and the applications may only be considered when there are positions left unfilled by candidates meeting all the qualification requirements.

** A degree in Linguistics or Modern Languages should be one in which English is the major language studies

And for Secondary NET:

Qualifications for Appointment

Candidates should be native-speakers of English or have native-speaker English competence and should possess:
(i) A bachelor's degree majoring in English Language or English Literature or English Studies or Linguistics** or a Modern Language** OR a Bachelor of Education degree (majoring in English or a Modern Language** but not primary education specialist) obtained after 3 years' full-time study; and
(ii) A Post-graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) majoring in English or equivalent; and
(iii) At least 1 year's post-graduate experience of teaching English (preferably as a second or foreign language) at secondary school level or above.
Applicants who possess a Teaching of English as a Foreign Language or a Second Language (TEFL/TESL) qualification at least at diploma level on top of the above will be given priority.
Applicants who possess a bachelor's degree in other academic subjects AND a PGDE or equivalent AND a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at diploma level AND at least 1 year's post-graduate experience of teaching English at secondary school level or above may also apply and the applications may only be considered when there are positions left unfilled by candidates meeting all the qualification requirements.

** A degree in Linguistics or Modern Languages should be one in which English is the major language studies.
