| It probably sounds strange to most, but I prefer working in China--despite the lower salaries and paucity of amenities. The students are usually motivated, and are curious about the West. You can learn a great deal and become a better teacher. You can improve your Chinese language skills, take tai chi and kung fu, you are close to other Asian countries and Hainan for vacations, etc. The hot pot cuisine is great. At some point in life you may have to decide between equally attractive options. And I don't say this flippantly. I was a TA and an adjunct for years, and now I have tenure. So I've seen academic life in the US from varying perspectives. |

Not strange to me at all, but then again I don't have the option of doing the same kind of work (teaching at a college or university) in my home country. Considering my options, I find the amenities to be somewhat sufficient, including:
1) nearly 10 weeks of paid vacation this past summer break (paid winter and summer break combined average of 3 and 1/2 months)
2) a teaching schedule of 14 classes per week
3) almost free (rent is 400RMB) 1-bedroom apartment overlooking a tranquil park and beautiful man-made lake
4) cheap flights to Thailand, my wife's home country
5) free medical insurance (my wife's is very affordable)
I think free time (like the kind spent here on Dave's) is the most valuable amenity of all. The amount of free time I have depends on how much extra money my wife tells me to go out and make during the breaks! |
