It's the big city syndrome. Same in NYC, if you go anywhere in the states ppl will say - New Yorkers are rude and annoying, the city is awful etc etc... |
Dokladnie.
People visit Warsaw for a few days/weeks, are shocked by the fast pace, the hustle and bustle, the rude shop clerks (and they are rude, BTW) at Dworrzec Centralna etc. and then tell everyone about how they can't stand Warsaw for he rest of their lives.
Give the city a little while to grow on you.
Before returning to Poland, I lived for 18 months in Bangkok, Thailand. Just imagine Warsaw but with more than twice the people, terrible public transportation, and street vendors, motorcycles and stray dogs clogging the sidewalks.
Compared to Bangkok, Warsaw is a walk in the park. |

Big City? Warsaw? Really?
It's hard to imagine anywhere in Poland being "Big City".
LA? yeah. NYC? yeah. Tokyo? yeah. Beijing? sure. Berlin? kinda.
Warsaw, Poland?
I've yet to go there, but I'd imagine the only people who think Warsaw is "Big City" are Poles. |

Warsaw's got a million people. That's big to me. I spent six weeks there two years ago while getting my CELTA. I didn't like it much-too big for me, too fast, not very pretty, but I know a few people who live there and they love it. I'll stay in Gdansk, thank you. |

Dynow, you can't compare like that... Poland is half the size of TX mang!
Warsaw is not that big, true, but at the same time it's big enough where you can easily find tons to do after just few days of living here and I'm not just saying Bierhale or other fine beer establishments.
I've been able to find some very interesting venues with all sorts of music and entertainment. I think what Warsaw lacks is a centralized webpage with info on all fun things Warsaw. |

What Warsaw lacks is a lived in Stary Rynek. Zamek looks nice but except for a titty bar there's sweet fa in it regarding late night venues and wgho wants to just gawk anyway?. Places like Poznan and Wroclaw are much more centralized...everything's 2 minutes away and the place is abuzz with life. Warsaw is a dump...I've lived there and been in and around Poland since 95. |

Master Shake,
I'm paying 1800zł. for a 32m2 flat in Ochota, 15 minutes from centrum. It's a bit pricey and I'm sure there are better deals to be had around town, but I'm happy with it. I share it with a nice Polish girl who loves making food for me and paying rent.
I was new to Warsaw and didn't know anybody when I found it. I got the place through an agency, and I'm glad I did. If I hadn't coughed up the extra dough to the agency to find me this place, I would have ended up back in a hostel while teaching, and I sure as hell didn't want to try that!
PM me for the agency contact if you're interested. We should get together for a piwo when your arrive in Warszawa. Maybe you can teach me your tram hoisting trick so I can impress all of the ladies, too. |

Tracer, I'm already here. I found a flat using an agent. It's near Most Poniatowskiego
Yes, it would be almost impossible to find a flat without an agent (or speaking Polish). Strange thing about my flat was that the 60+ year-old landlady spoke good English but the 30-something agent didn't speak a word of it. She actually translated for him.
Afraid I can't share my tram trick with you, but I'll PM you with my numer. I'm going out for a beer tonight (Fri), if you're up for it.[/quote] |

Hi,
I've just arrived in Warsaw and appear to have made quite a bad decision regarding housing. Due to some miscommunication I'm currently paying 1300 for part of a very small shared flat in the suburbs. I haven't signed anything luckily, and am planning to move out and into the centre as soon as possible. However, there doesn't seem to be much up on gumtree at the moment. I was just wondering if anyone could recommend some good agencies? I'm afraid I can't PM as I haven't made enough posts but would really appreciate any replies/emails about this.
Many thanks

Yes, you are paying too much.
I can't reccommend anyone in particular (my agent didn't speak English), but search oferty.net - many of the flats here are through agencies.
The fee you pay the agent shouldn't be more than 50% of a month's rent. Less if you're lucky.
Good luck! |

All the agents I've met in Poland take 100% of the first month's rent, hence I avoid them like the scum-sucking plague they are. One way or the other 1300zł for a room in Warsaw's backwaters is heinous. |

Yep, consensus generally seems to be that I've been had. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a lot (in English) on Warsaw Gumtree at the moment. I'm going to try to find a Polish speaker to help me navigate the oferty website but I really need to get a place soon and may end up having to resort to agencies. Will try to find one that only charges 50%.... |

Yeah you're in trouble if you don't have a Pole to help you navigate gumtree... your school doesn't fancy helping you?
Is the place you're in now at least of a nice standard? |
