Were all of you direct hires? Do you think universities are not going to bother hiring directly anymore and just go the recruiter route? |

lizzie, the thing of it is, Saudi is going through a revolutionary change with regards to university education. They have never needed so many new ESL teachers in as many start-up programs as we've seen over the past three years. Once the infrastructure sets in, they will most likely not need to do so much mass hiring as we've been seeing these days with KSU, PMU and all of the other government universities throughout the Kingdom. |

I've had a few jobs in KSA, and in every case I've been hired directly by the employer.
In answer to your question, it's difficult to say if the 'fashion' for using agencies will become permanent. As kalima says, the university system is undergoing massive expansion in the Kingdom right now, and some universities may feel unable to do all the hiring by themselves. Bell are reputed to be looking to hire several hundred ESL teachers for KSU, to give just one example.
It remains to be seen whether the agencies will remain a part of the scene in KSA, or if, as kalima says, they may be discarded once things settle down and the universities feel they have the infrastructure to do their own hiring. Only time will tell. |

A year ago I contacted hiring departments at KSU, and was told that they do not hire ESL teachers directly and that it must be done through their chosen recruiter. This was after other teachers had told me to apply directly through the unviversity for the best package. Hm.
Cleopatra, I used to come on here a few years ago and you were so nasty, but now you answer things directly and with humanity. What happened? |

I wouldn't say 'discarded.' Maybe fazed out (slowly but surely) is more like it. |

I dunno. Maybe people started asking polite, intelligent questions and didn't throw a fit when other people didn't deliver the answer they wanted.

Either way, it is to be hoped that these agencies will not become a permanent fixture. Even if they are fased out, however, the lousy conditions on offer from these places may not change. As I've said elsewhere, though, happily there still are some decent employers who are prepared to pay for quality staff. |

Dear NCTBA,
And then there is this:
"It is permissible to omit the comma after a brief introductory element if the omission does not result in confusion or hesitancy in reading.
It is permissible, even commonplace, to omit a comma after most brief introductory elements a prepositional phrase, an adverb, or a noun phrase:
Yesterday afternoon we sat around waiting for Bill to arrive.
By evening we had become impatient.
Jauntily he walked into the hall.
