Why are you asking this on a discussion board for English teachers?
I presume that by "convoy" you mean a convoy of ships. Since Congo is located on Africa's west (Atlantic Ocean) coast, and the pirates in the news have been operating off the coast of Somalia on Africa's east (Indian Ocean) coast, your husband going 120 kilometers out to sea a few times a week is probably not going to be a problem. Of course, I'm writing this as a Navy veteran who spent a lot of time on ships. If it's an American company, you can likely find somewhat better working conditions than if the company were Congolese.
Will $4,300 a month be enough to live on and still have money left over for a little savings? Check out some of the various cost of living calculators: http://www.expatfinder.com/p48-cost-of-living-congo.html or http://www.costofliving.net/ or http://www.asia-expatsforum.com/phpBB2/intcol.php. |

I was in the DRC and there is extreme danger on patrols. You didn't say where you would be on the E or West. There is a civil war going on, there are killings everyday, soliders who are not getting paid by the govt. The Soldiers pilage off of the population, it's a big mess. Futhermore the AID groups have made much of the economy dependent on their presence, their buying power and the money they filter in. It is not a cheap place to live. Although much depends on where in the Congo you would be. The west is a different world than the E. There are something like 5 waring rebel groups in the E.
CNN recently ran this story with links and GOOD information about the Congo. Read that before even considering the Congo.
