It's not as bad as it gets. Most Bengalis you talk to will tell you that, due to their low incomes and the system of agencies in their country, they enter Saudi Arabia already in debt to the agency. Kind of like indentured servitude. |

The word Camels is used here in the plural form and an APOSTROPHE has therefore been omitted |
Thank you, Mr K! Whoever's delivering it is going to have trouble finding parking close to my building - hope you told them to keep it well chilled!
Use of plural and non-use of apostrophe noted.
Nice to see you here again - you always make me laugh! |

Hello,
I'm a Newbie to posting, but I've been reading a lot. I'm in negotiation with a recruiter for Princess Noura University, and I'm asking a lot of questions but ready to sign and hopefully go to work soon.
About the recruiters and the offers they make (free accommodations, transportation, etc.): What's the solution? I don't see any way to bypass the recruiter. There's no way to reach the employer. If an iqama is necessary in order to rent an apartment, rent or buy a car, and get a driver's license, but the iqama takes forever to obtain, what's the answer?
I want to save money while I'm there. It seems that finding my own accommodations and transportation would save me some money (right?), but how?
To take the package or leave it, that's the question. |

Well thank you Mr P the feeling is mutual.
Is that a shiny new avatar I see there?
Very nice indeed although the choice of avatar I feel is often a reflection of an innate quality which one often sees in oneself . (Yes I know how to talk posh when I wants to) which is why I chose a dead midget schoolboy impersonator.

In every way I am Mr K

Some of this was answered on the other thread, but remember women (since you signed your name on another post) are not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia, so buying a car isn't an option and you couldn't get a driving license even if you wanted one. You would need an iqama to rent a flat, and that may also not be an option for you. With some employers in KSA, women must stay in the provided housing.
Actually... it is unlikely that renting your own accommodations and buying a car would save you any money. In fact, it would drastically cut your income in most cases. Buying a car is only economically feasible - in the Gulf countries where women do drive - if you are staying for over 2-3 years. I suspect that most of the people applying to these recruiter jobs will want to stay anywhere near that long.

To ask a genuine question:
Is it not true that in at least some cases recruitment agencies' commission is a % of the employee's salary? In which case it would be in their interest to ensure you get as high, rather than as low, a salary as possible. Of course, in the case of agencies hiring large amounts of people for the same job, who are earning pretty much the same salary, this may not apply. |
Shouldn't that be "large numbers of people....."? The whole count/non-count thing is usually covered in Basic English 1. |

Dear Tomboy,
As English is my first language, I never did a 'Basic English 1' course. But yes, you are of course right, the correct usage is 'numbers' in the case of countable nouns. Had I taken the trouble to reread my post before posting it, I'd probably have spotted it and changed it. However, because I post quite a lot on this board, and believe it or not, do have other things going on in my life, I often can't be bothered editing my posts for grammar every time. After all, this is an informal board and, as anyone with any common sense knows, standards in such a context are not as strict as they would be in a more formal context.
Now.... do you have anything to add to the discussion on agencies? Or on any other aspect of ESL in Saudi Arabia?
