I'm surprised that this was ever a debate in the first place. Just like in the States most or all of the big-name beers are crap, while the lesser-known brands or microbrews are quite good. For anyone who contends that Polish beers are substandard, I recommend trying any of the underground beers listed here. Zywe is excellent as are many from the Konstancin brewery (Dawne), the lubelskie brewery also makes lots of great beers.
I like Perla for a light, everyday beer. It's also only 2.75 PLN/bottle at the local store. |

You'll have to go to a small shop to find them. I know of a couple of places in Gdansk with Zywe on tap but I can't help you with Warsaw. |

i tried Zywe, not a fan.
i still stick to Heineken or Grolsch. to me, it's worth the extra .60 or .70 per can.
i'd recommend EPI for some obscure beers. of course EPI is over priced, but you can find some hard to find beers there. |

There's a small pub/cafe on Hoza between Poznanska and Emilii Plater which serves Dawne and other beers from the Konstancin brewery. I think they have a sign out which says Dawne. Right around the corner to the left on Emilii Plater there is a pub which serves Lubelski in bottles. There is a "delikatesy" right on the corner of Poznanska and Nowogrodzka which has bottles of Zywe, Kozlak, and Perla. On Zurawia between Poznanska and Marszalkowska there is small pub which serves Kozlak in bottles. All of these places are about 2-3 minutes walk from each other.
Good luck. |

Oh yeah, Carrefour has nothing but crap, just an entire aisle full of crap. Most or all of the big Polish breweries are owned by Carlsburg which is quite possibly the crappiest beer in the world, right before Heineken which smells like weed and tastes crap. |

Is there a problem with the smell of weed? |

It's probably not hip, but I don't like the smell of weed in my anything. I know that the hipper folk on this board would probably like to live in a world where everything tasted and smelled like their own bong-resin-caked clothes and apartments but not this old boy. |

Carrefour @ Galeria Mokotow in Warsaw is full of good beer, also, right across from Carrefour, there is a health food store where you can find a small selection of nice brews. |

gotta say I'm getting to be a big fan of the non-pasteurized beers. I always try a new one if I can see one on the shelf. Last week on nowy swiat there was a kind of farmer's market where lots of people were selling micro-micro brewery beer (you got the feeling they were making it in their sheds). I stayed away from the cherry and other fruit beers, but the 'jasne' 'mocne' and 'ciemny' non-pas versions were very nice. Made you toot in the morning though, mind you i'm getting old so that might just be me ...... |
Did you try the honey beer? Really did have a strong honey flavor. But I wouldn't drink more than a pint of that sweet stuff.
But yes, there were a lot of good darker beers on Nowy Swiat. Great spread of regional Polish breads, sausages and cheeses there as well.
I couldn't believe my eyes. The most popular stand served bread smeared with lard and topped with pickles |
haha.. yea, lard, the Polish tradition hahaha... anyone over 3o here grew up eating that stuff. Nowy Swiat hosts these beer fairs pretty often... after it's all over, you can go to Bierhale for a round of some good Alt or Wheat or just follow it all the way up to the Browarnia... either way it's a good day! |

uff... really? It smells like a badly rinsed floor rag and it leaves a nasty after taste in your mouth, usually followed by a massive headache! |

yeah yeah, Heineken is skunky, yada yada, but i still prefer it over polish beers.
what about Budweiser (from the Czech Republic of course, not that toxic American brew)? i prefer it over Heineken, great beer, easy drinking, comparable in cost to Heineken. |
