Dear been_there,
Your Momma must read Nelson Algren - but she forgot one of his maxims:

"Never play cards with a man called Doc. Never eat at a place called Moms. Never sleep with a woman whose troubles are worse than your own"
Nelson Algren
"Never Come Morning"
Regards,
John
P.S. And isn't the first one - "Never fence with a left-handed swordsman" -from the movie, "The Princess Bride"?

Dear L.A.
In the case of "Never sleep with a woman whose troubles are worse than your own" (and, of course, the ladies could substitute "man" for "woman"), the quote's so well remembered because of its correspondence to experience.
Regards,
John

Amen.

Wasnt there a Nelson Algren thread last year?

He had an affair with Simone de Beauvoir, or she with him, a case of QED Im sure.

@LA---I am confident that Dr Slat has "got out more" in an hour than you have in a month of Sundays. Maybe you should "stay in" a bit --hic--more

all best
kh Wink

Dear khmerhit,
Thanks for the comment - but "Doctor" is a title unmerited. It reminds me of when my students in Riyadh used to call me that. I'd tell them I wasn't a doctor. That'd usually prompt them to ask:

"Then what we call you?"

To which I'd reply:

" Well, I do have a Master's degree. So, why not just call me "Master"?

As for L.A.'s advice - hey, it's the privilege of youth to try to teach their grandfathers how to suck eggs. I used to do it; you probably did, too. And besides, I've always believed you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.
Regards,
John
