Would you charge more for a small group of students?
I have a potential client who is putting together a group of 10 year old boys (2-4 sts) and needs a teacher. To me, it seems the hourly rate should reflect the number of students, although I would not charge 80zl per hour x number of sts, probably just 40 or 50. |
I'd rather kill myself than teach children, but I love teaching teenagers. I won't travel to a student. Either they come to my flat or we meet at Absinthe, a pub only five minutes from my flat. I don't charge as much as most of you do but all of my privates come from referrals. But this is in Gdansk, and it's just me. |

Why don't you just ask Karl (the owner of Absinthe) to let you live out of the spacious boy's toilet, Scott? Lord knows you spend a good deal of your time in there already.
Anyway, always better to have students come to you, agreed. But I have a new proficiency private student starting next week and she just wrote to me that she's scared to come straight to my flat for the first lesson. She wants to meet in a coffee shop first instead.
Nuts, looks like I'll have to put a shirt on and everything... |

even then, there's every chance she'll do a runner.
When I saw you in the coffee shop I thought about making a quick exit, sharpish |

I don't think you can charge too much for 10 yo boys!
I've had em.
Do get your money up front if you can. I agree, ask for 120 zl/hour no matter if it is 3 or 4. That at least, would make the hassle of 3 or 4 rowdy boys worth it. |

The parents are probably desperate to get a native teacher for their children in Warsaw right now, that any price you'll say, they'll pay you! Personally, I wouldn't teach kids in a group setting because the children feed off each other. I prefer to give the children 1-1 lessons because it'll help them later on because 100% of the attention is on them and not divided between 2 or 3 other kids! |

why?
does it make any difference to you, regarding your time and effort, if it is 10 yr. olds or 20 yr. olds or 30 yr. olds? one could argue the kids require more effort and planning.
look, just because someone asks you to teach their kids, doesn't mean that you now need to sacrifice yourself for......for what.....the sake of the kids? why? parents got money to spend on themselves to take lessons at a school, they can do the same for their children.
the market requires you to pay X amount of zl. for English lessons with a native. just because the age of the students fluctuate, doesn't mean your rate should as well. if the parents think it's too expensive, fine, let them run around the city looking for another reliable, organized, qualified and CHEAP? native
give me one good reason why i should teach your kid for 50zl. an hour when i can get 80-100zl. an hour teaching an adult??? gotta pay to play. |

I read this as you can't charge ENOUGH to make it worth teaching 10-year-olds.
I think that in Warsaw you can get almost any sum for teaching kids, and yes, parents are really looking for private native speaker lessons. It's like a new trend. Need to have a Cayanne (sp?) or Q7 and native speaker lessons for the kids. |

a group of 6 kids should be 200zl. for an hour. That's a measly 35zl per wealthy parent. while you're teaching the kids, the parents can all go to the cafe and buy an 18zl cup of coffee and a 15zl piece of cake. |

Lessons with two kids are easier for me than lessons with one kid. With 2 kids, I can sit back and jot down or correct their mistakes while they do pair speaking activities.
With one kid, I have to do the bloomin activities with them myself. This gets mind-numbingly boring and tedious after doing the same information-gap activity umpteen times.
Plus, with 2 kids I can have them compete against each other for points, which they really enjoy (especially boys!). |

Now I'm a dad I have to say that I wouldn't let any tefl teacher I hang out with go anywhere near my 10 year-old son.
Ignorance is bliss I spose. |

What I meant is that a group of boys that age are a handful. That's all. You will earn your money--however much you ask. A group of two is quite doable, however. A group of 5 or 6 gets "interesting". (I've had one.)
Maybe for a man teacher, they'd be better behaved than they were for me. When I asked them why they were even in class since it was obvious they weren't interested in English, after asking them for the umpteenth time to quit listening to music on their cell phones, talking, throwing their pens, throwing things out the window, etc. one or two admitted that it was because their parents paid for the whole semester up front. I never want to teach a group like that again unless I have the phone numbers of their parents and have the authority to contact them. (in this case, I didn't and couldn't seem to have direct access to their parents and the school never did anything about their behavior.)
Good luck. I really did like the kids--just despised their behavior. I knew they were tired. It was after school and they were tired of classes. They would rather be playing computer games or playing soccer/football. |
