I review CVs at a school in Europe, and do prefer a CELTA, Trinity, or SIT (or DELTA) over generic certs that I don't know (I am familiar with a few that I personally think are equivalent and I do accept those).

As we've pointed out on another thread, some of us simply haven't the time to research an unfamiliar generic cert if it shows up on a CV in our inboxes, among the others.

To clarify another issue, are you aiming to take a course in the country where you want to start working? In that case, Europe (Greece) won't be the best choice assuming that you are a US citizen only (no EU citizenship). Legal working options for newbie-level non-EU teachers in the European Union are generally limited to 'new' EU countries, such as Poland, the Czech Rep, Slovakia, etc. For more info on Americans and options in Greece, you could refer to the Greece forum below. Ditto Italy and Spain and Portugal....all extremely unlikely to issue a newbie-level teacher a legal work permit.

Latin America is the easier option, I think.

you are helpful. I have always known about the EU issue for Americans, so therefore when I make this choice it will be with full knowledge that IF I train in an EU country it will be for the training experience only without prospect of a first teaching position. That of course can be frustrating and I know may be a big mistake. good news is that I haven't made it yet. I have traveled in both areas. I already speak French and I am learning Spanish and expect to teach pretty much in a Latin country due to the appeal of the culture, however the idea of taking a training in some different place has its own appeal even though it may not be wise. I do have a bachelors , law school, a masters, and additional professional training and years of connecting and engaging in a teaching and inspiring process. it is now time to live more fully abroad.

will keep hunting. the Trinity, Celta , and SIT are the given first choices , and thanks to all of your input, it certainly made the narrowing down easier. and will continue to watch here and search on other forums....

Thank heavens for a realistic and informed newbie to the field! We take a lot of flak from disappointed candidates who have a hard time believing that they might not be welcomed everywhere in the world with open arms.

I understand the idea of taking a course somewhere you just want to spend some time (though, keep in mind how intensive the courses are - don't plan to enjoy your surroundings much during it!), and then moving on.

Ah yes.....
I have thought about the lack of time there will be for enjoying the surroundings....and I am taking that into consideration. I have seen that the courses are pretty exhaustive and time intensive. Hopefully I will be OK. Not really sure where I will end up but I am certainly enjoying the looking! The money is the same no matter what so one could ask what is there to lose? I know someone will reply "oh you will lose your ability to make contacts etc..." well that may just have to be...then again maybe not.
