The best method for getting certification as a teacher is to enter a recognized teacher education program; that is, enrolling in the Faculty of Education at a recognized university. The praxis exams as I understand them are designed by ETS, a testing service, for use by Faculties of Education and the counselling function of a university to gauge competency and aptitude for entrance into the Faculty of Education. Get the teaching degree if you want credibility as a career teacher. Short cuts and quicker/cheaper avenues to certification often leave one short of the mark .... quickly.
I can't get my teacher certification yet since I can't get into a teacher preparation program yet. I still have to pass my Praxis I test. I still need to score about ten points higher on the math section. I passed the reading and writing.

I also have to take some more classes (another math, two more science courses [since I got a C- in my Environmental Science], and one more world history).

Anyway, the university I plan on doing this through is Old Dominion University, but, as I said, i have to do the stuff above first before I can even get into the program. My GPA is also off by like .1, so the extra classes will help me to bring it up.
Consider an alternative teacher certification program if you already have a bachelor's degree.

That was the alternative. lol I was just going for a teacher cert, not a graduates. You still need a certain GPA and have passed the Praxis I before even being allowed into the program. I need extra classes to boost up my GPA.

Virginia requires you to pass the Praxis I before getting into an alternative certification program? Interesting.

Approved Program - a Virginia state-approved teacher preparation program or an alternative state approved program. (For more information relative to this method of licensure, please contact the Virginia college or university where you wish to enroll.)*
This is the route I'm taking since the others I can't really do. Kind of strict here, seemingly, with who they hire now-a-days. I don't have "official experience" working with children...all unofficial, meaning, it was unpaid, undocumented work, so I get overlooked a lot.

Another alternative into getting into the teacher prep program that can substitute for the Praxis I, is to have a certain SAT score. I took it back in 1998, though, and I didn't score high enough to use that, so I have to use the Praxis I scores, but, as I mentioned, I still need about 10 more points for that because of the math section. I passed the reading and writing, but not the math section.

There's a discussion of alternative teacher certification programs here: http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=74091

Thanks for the information there. I'll definitely check the links out.

On another note, I'm officially in. Did the interview and everything. I start the CELTA course November 2 and will be done December 18.
