Hello,
I'm planning on staying in a hostel until I can find a place to live. Can anyone recommend a relatively cheap hostel that they have stayed in that is situated close to the airport or a short taxi ride from the airport?

First you haven't said which city you are going to. There aren't any hostels close to any airports. The airports for HCMC and Hanoi are around 20 ks from their respective airports.
If you're going to Hanoi, log onto 'The New Hanoian' for general information; including accommodation. Maybe Mekong ESl will provide you with similar information about HCMC.
Also, buy a copy Lonely Planet Vietnam and it will give you some information about accommodation and other information you need. |

Oops, I'm going to HCMC. Sorry about that.
I have a copy of Lonely Planet Vietnam which is very helpful, but I'm more interested in speaking to people who can give 1st hand accounts of their hostel experiences.
I realize I can find reviews on the web, but I was hoping to hear from others on Dave�s ESL Caf�. |

When you get out of the airport, get a taxi to PHAM NGU LAO. Ask the taxi driver to take you to a KACH SAN- thats like a mini hotel. They are everywhere there-and the prices range from $10-$40 a night, and are negotiable for longer stays. Almost the city centre, lots of western style restaurants and tak aways, and lots of other westerners.
There are some near the airport, but as aniother poster said, bit out of the city.
The taxi driver will have recommendations.

This post is on the money. You can just show up on Pham Ngu Lao or Detham Streets and if you have a backpack or suitcase you will be smothered by people asking you for a room to rent.
May I suggest that you take any place in the 15-20 USA funds for the first three nights and use those three days to check for places to live or another guest house for a longer stay. You might find a deal that suits you better. |
