Hi everyone! well given the responses i decided to not fully consider this guy's proposal..i spoke to him about it..he has decided to use books but admited that the "first months" are hard. He eventually suggested that I look for another "main job" and that he would talk to some people and see if he could get me hired.

Now assuming that he can't or that i have to go there..what is the best chance of me finding a job teaching english in the Celaya GTO and queretaro area? I have a bachelors in history, associates in business, 4 years teaching experience(i have also taught esl). Serious replys only pls! This is really important!!

Hi, Jack. I'm new to this forum, and new to Mexico (Cancun), so I don't have much, personally, to add, but I just wanted to tell you that the people who post to this forum seem to have a remarkable fund of good, positive experience in living and working in Mexico, and good, positive advice to give. I'm relying on them, myself, as I prepare, tomorrow, to apply for the FM3, forma independiente. I consulted with a local attorney, specialist in immigration, and he had little to add to what I'd learned, here.

I haven't seen such a lot of useful, and detailed advice on Mexico anywhere else. I have a lot of experience teaching English, abroad, but little, so far in Mexico. Perhaps I'll soon have something to contribute, myself, but for now, I'm relying on this forum for direction.

It looked to me like the posters were giving serious replies to you, in the other thread. In discouraging you from the offer you got I thought posters were trying to say two things, first, it's not a good deal and, two, there's better options available to you, given your qualifications.

Jack, have your considered doing a course, as a way to get things moving in the right direction? I don't know Celaya, but doing a course in Mexico, for a person who is serious about teaching in Mexico, can't be a bad idea for one who doesn't have a TEFL/CELTA. It puts you in the environment, under controlled conditions, both of Mexico, and of teaching English in the classroom.

Additionally, doing the course in Mexico means you don't have to worry about getting your certificate apostilled. (I just went through an amazingly long, and expensive process of pulling together everything I needed to apply for permission to work, in part because my TEFL was obtained from another country.)

I haven't looked, but perhaps there are courses in Queretaro, or Celaya, you could take advantage of. Do the course somewhere else, and you might, in the end, decide it wasn't necessary to limit yourself to these two places, after all.

Hope this is helpful: sometimes just taking the first step is the most difficult part of the whole process. (From someone who's been there.)

Yes, having a CELTA especially or some kind of tefl cert makes the whole process much smoother. You can still get hired without one, though. Celaya/GTO/Queretaro is a fairly expensive area to live so you'll want to bring some extra money in case the pay from one job isn't enough - quite the norm here - I work 3 jobs.

You might want to look into subject teaching at unis or prepas since your degree is in an unrelated (to ELT) area.
