Hi Everyone,
I need your help finding a reliable school to do my TESL or CELTA certification in Toronto.

I was considering LSC http://www.lsc-canada.com/celta/celta-at-lsc-toronto in Toronto. It seems to have a very intensive 4 week course, which suits me, although the price is a bit high.

Anyone have experience studying at Toronto schools and have recommendations, warnings or suggestions?

Here's a Trinity course in Toronto that is accepted by TESL Canada: http://www.study-at-coventry.com/chi/index.htm. This one also does an online course but with both the on-site and online courses the all-important supervised teaching practice is done on-site. Their school is located on Bay Street up by the University of Toronto.

Thanx for this. The link didn't seem to work. I fixed it http://www.study-at-coventry.com/ . Do you personally have experience with this program? Do tell.

I did their online course and did the teaching practice on-site there in Toronto. The on-site course is a Trinity course (one of those brand name TESL courses you might have seen mentioned on various threads). They emphasize the communicative approach to ESL (http://bogglesworldesl.com/glossary/communicativeapproach.htm).

Hi! I'm a Canadian citizen returning to Canada, probably to Calgary after living and working in Israel as an EFL high school teacher for many years. I'm considering taking the online TESL Canada course through Ontesl while still residing in Israel. I would like to hear what graduates (!) of this course thought of it regarding its content and difficulty and if in fact people actually got jobs and it is recognized everywhere in Canada apart from Ontario, which I now know you must have TESL Ontario to teach in that province. I'd also be very grateful if anyone has experience teaching ESL to adults or children in Calgary and what might my chances of landing a decent job be. I have a BEd and a teaching diploma, both from an Israeli state-run teachers college, have taught high school for 11 years with some experience teaching and tutoring adults - all speakers of Hebrew. I am currently applying for my provincial teaching certificate in Alberta along with my TESL Canada certificate. I'd appreciate any info on the above. Thanks, Deena Shocked

The ONTESOL course is recognized by TESL Canada but, as with any of the courses on the TESL Canada list, you also need a four-year degree from a Canadian university or a four-year degree that has been evaluated by a Canadian degree evaluation service like the one at University of Toronto. The ONTESOL course (the online course - the on-site course is a Trinity course) consists of three major sections: phonology, grammar (which is actually diploma level) and methodology and, yes, the course is intense - I've had 400-level college courses that were easier.

Thanks for your reply. How long did it take you to complete the course?

I ended up taking several months because I was working a full-time job (still am) and working on a bachelor's degree and those ended up pushing my TESL course to the back burner.

And excuse me for asking, did the TESL certificate help you land any decent ESL teaching jobs, and if so, in which province/city? I'm asking because despite the fact that I do hold a BEd + a teaching diploma and have had many years experience teaching EFL (in Israel), I've heard it's very hard finding a REAL ESL (adult) teaching job even with the TESL cert.

I live in the US (just two hours southwest of Toronto) but from what I've heard the Toronto market has an overabundance of ESL teachers; here in Buffalo they have people doing adult ESL who have TESL certificates but some of the places that employ them would prefer they also have state certification in adult education (however, there are relatively few ESL teachers here as there isn't as big a market for them). I'm presently involved in an alternative teacher certification program (focusing on grades EC-4 and ESL) through the state of Texas that will get me into the public schools (my eventual goal is to get into international schools overseas). My TESL cert will be helpful at least as far as general concepts of language instruction are concerned.
