Well, I got fired today, which is fine, but it happened in a weird way - went to class, Chinese co-teacher came in, asked what I was doing there, told her that I work on Wednesdays, at which point she said that Miss **** (boss) told all the Chinese teachers I no longer work there - how cool is that, getting the boot without being told about it?

Tingshuo, I guess that's just how it works - 30 day notice be damned! So I guess I can finally work on that novel to end all novels now huh...

For missing/being late for work. Three buses to get to work, the first of which sometimes entails a close to 30 minute wait, plus being a busy bus filled with old peasants = me not making it on time/skipping out on work.

I mean, having a lao ren openly sneeze on you whilst getting shoved by other lao ren in the ribs on the first bus is always a wonderful way to start the day, yeah...

FTs who take your job for granted be warned. We are not indispensable.

Were you warned? They're only supposed to be able to fire you after giving you a chance to improve these days

Maybe you ought to find a job that gives you an apartment close to work?

Not uncommon; don't forget this is a "developing" nation, especially in the inter-human relationship department. I think the firing style you have experienced is called the "firing Express way Chinese style" kind, so called because it really is the fastest the manage as they no longer count on China Post to deliver a registered letter of termination.

I have much sympathy for the OP. Sounds like a situation not entirely dissimilar to my own in Korea. My school was 18ks from where i lived and the buses were irregular enough for it to be a pain. My co-teacher didn't bother to give me the bus timetable. So i bought an old clunker, a farmer piled into me, I fled the country (so not to be sued). School didn't want me back cos now i'm a 'troublesome teacher'.
Instead of dealing with the root cause of the problem (distance to school on bus) and adjusting and assisting for this, they just wave us away and import another model.
I think they (Chinese and Koreans) have something seriously wrong with their problem solving circuitry when they can't sort out rudimentary problems.

The root of all this is simply their perception of whose problem it is. They don't see it as their problem because, in this instance, they are not responsible for the buses. So, it must be your problem.

It sounds like something that happened to me when I was in university in Canada. I had a part-time job and they asked me to come in on a Saturday morning. I told them I was going outta town for the weekend so sorry. I came in on Monday for my regular shift and people were like "hey what are you doing here?" Apparently on Saturday morning they fired like half the staff and I was supposed to be in on that meeting of mass firing. Sucks when the other staff are telling you that you weren't supposed to be there before management.

No offence mate, but I'd fire you, too. If I had an employee who couldn't or wouldn't come to work on time and skip the duties I pay him or her for...

*beep* em' That's a bullshit reason, especially if he has explained why he is late. Why is everyone being a jerk ?

Make sure they give you the separation letter or whatever it is called, so you can use your visa to get a new job.

MOD EDIT

I know if I got fired, my boss would either have to scramble like mad to find another FT, or teach the classes him self. Despite my job being somewhat safe, I am always expecting the bad news to come, as this is China... Rolling Eyes
